Republic Day 2026: 982 Personnel Receive Gallantry and Service Medals
On Republic Day 2026, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs announced the awarding of gallantry and service medals to 982 personnel from various disciplines, including police, fire services, and civil defence. This initiative recognises the dedication and bravery displayed by these individuals in their respective fields.
Among the 982 awards, 125 were designated as bravery medals. The highest number of recipients came from Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the region's ongoing challenges and the commitment of its law enforcement agencies. The awards ceremony continues a long-standing tradition of honouring those who have shown exceptional courage and service to the nation.
The recipients include members of the police forces engaged in counter-terrorism operations, as well as officials who have made significant contributions to public safety in high-risk areas. This year's awards highlight the critical role played by security personnel in maintaining peace and order, especially in regions that face substantial security challenges.
The recipients have been selected based on their exceptional service records and their ability to perform duties under challenging conditions. The Union Home Minister is expected to personally confer the medals during the Republic Day celebrations, which are a significant event in the Indian national calendar, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950.
The awarding of these medals not only recognises individual bravery but also serves to motivate other personnel to strive for excellence in their services. The awards sentimentally honour their commitment to protecting the citizens of India and maintaining public safety in often hazardous environments.
The Republic Day festivities are traditionally marked by a parade, which showcases India’s cultural heritage, military prowess, and diversity, culminating in the decoration of these brave individuals for their service to the country.
