Renowned Tamil Director Bharathiraja Dies at 84 in Chennai
Bharathiraja, a legendary Tamil film director, passed away in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government will honour his legacy with state funeral.

Bharathiraja, a prominent figure in Tamil cinema, passed away on June 10, 2026, in Chennai at the age of 84. The director had been suffering from health issues for some time prior to his death. Known for revolutionising Tamil cinema, he shifted the industry’s focus from studio-bound films to authentic rural narratives. His iconic phrase, "En Iniya Thamizh Makkale" (My dear Tamilians), became a hallmark of his storytelling style. Bharathiraja, affectionately referred to as Iyakkunar Imayam (Pinnacle among Directors), held numerous accolades, including six National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards (South).

Born Chinnasamy on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram, Theni district, Bharathiraja's journey in film began with his acclaimed debut, "16 Vayathinile". This film introduced a new lexicon to Tamil filmmaking, offering audiences raw, realistic portrayals of rural life. His distinctive ability to present compelling narratives while highlighting the vulnerabilities of his characters set him apart in the film industry.

His influence extended to the introduction of numerous actors, many of whom became stars under his guidance. Bharathiraja’s approach often saw him renaming his actors with an 'R', contributing to a notable legacy of talent in Tamil cinema. The actress Sridevi, who starred in his pivotal works, was among those who benefited from his vision.

In the aftermath of his passing, tributes from across the film industry have flooded in. Lyricist Vairamuthu expressed that Bharathiraja’s mortal remains will be taken to his hometown in Theni for last rites, scheduled for June 11, and that he will be laid to rest with full state honours. Bharathiraja’s remains will be available for public homage until 9 p.m. on the day prior to the burial.

Celebrated filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli called Bharathiraja a pioneer who changed the landscape of cinematic storytelling. Ram Gopal Varma hailed him as an auteur whose narratives could resonate across diverse audiences. Bharathiraja had a profound impact on the film fraternity over his nearly five-decade career, directing more than 40 films across various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

In addition to his cinematic contributions, Bharathiraja is remembered for addressing social issues through his films. Works such as "Vedam Puthithu" challenged social norms and spurred discussions on caste and identity. His films often depicted strong women characters, redefining the role of women in Tamil cinema. These narratives helped to elevate the genre beyond traditional storytelling limitations, allowing for deep explorations of societal flaws.

The Tamil Nadu Television Digital and OTT Producers Association has announced a 12-hour suspension of television shoots from June 11 as a mark of respect to the filmmaker. His passing leaves behind a significant legacy that reshaped Tamil cinema and inspired generations of filmmakers, ensuring his stories will remain a part of cinematic history.
