Reliance Jio Advances Indigenous Satellite Technology at IMC 2026
Jio reveals plans for 1,600 satellites to enhance connectivity in India at IMC 2026 amid competition from Starlink.

Reliance Jio Infocomm is gearing up to expand its connectivity services beyond traditional mobile towers and fibre networks. The company unveiled its ambitious plan to deploy a constellation of approximately 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, along with 23 ground stations throughout India, during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 held in New Delhi. This project, termed 'Sovereign Satellite Connectivity,' aims to complement existing telecom infrastructure, targeting regions of India where conventional connectivity is challenging to establish.

The proposed satellite network intends to enhance service availability across land and maritime areas, benefiting over 600,000 villages. The company identifies remote villages, islands, and border areas as key locations where satellite connectivity can play a significant role. Instead of functioning as an independent network, Jio plans to seamlessly integrate the satellite system with its current mobile and fibre infrastructure, thereby providing connectivity not just to households but also to sectors such as aviation, maritime operations, government, defence, and disaster response.

Jio has articulated its vision of facilitating direct-to-device calling for rural demographics through this satellite network. The initiative aligns with the broader theme of this year's IMC, which is 'Scale Without Boundaries.' The company's goal is to retain the complete satellite value chain within India, covering several phases including design, engineering, integration, testing, launch, deployment, and operation.

This announcement comes at a crucial time as Elon Musk’s Starlink is still in the process of obtaining regulatory approvals for its own satellite internet services in India. Musk has voiced concerns on social media, alleging that certain 'oligarchs' are obstructing Starlink's market entry to safeguard their positions. However, the Indian government has denied these claims, asserting that it adheres to a ‘fair and non-discriminatory’ authorization framework for telecom services, including satellite communications.

The Ministry of Communications has informed that Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications, and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb are concurrently progressing through the regulatory process, with security evaluations underway for all three companies. Starlink has already secured the GMPCS licence and IN-SPACe authorisation, although it must still complete its regulatory prerequisites before commencing commercial operations. The assignment of spectrum is also part of this process.

In contrast to Starlink's more singular focus on entering the Indian market, Jio's strategy represents an extensive long-term vision for satellite-based connectivity. Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani articulated that despite increasing tariffs from competitors, the company is committed to delivering affordable and quality service, which includes its satellite initiative. Ambani indicated, 'Jio will remain focused on affordable, quality services' while enhancing its technology capabilities.

The stakes in the Indian satellite broadband sector are rising, with both companies navigating their routes in a space ripe with potential for growth and innovation. As the communications landscape continues to evolve, the competitive dynamics will likely shape the future of connectivity across India.

Thus, Jio's substantial investment in satellite technology not only positions the company as a formidable contender in the telecommunications industry but also aims to bridge the digital divide in one of the world’s largest markets.
