Indian Air Force Showcases Aerial Skills at 94th Anniversary Event
The Indian Air Force celebrated its 94th anniversary with impressive aerial displays in Jodhpur, featuring the Surya Kiran and Sarang teams.

On 8 October, the Indian Air Force (IAF) commemorated its 94th birthday in Jodhpur with a spectacular display of aerial skill. The event showcased the expertise of both the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team and the Sarang Helicopter Display Team, turning the sky into a canvas of synchronised aerial manoeuvres.

The celebrations coincided with the ongoing multilateral air exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ at the Jodhpur base. Personnel from air forces representing the United States, France, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Germany were present to witness the event.

A large crowd, which included defence personnel, local officials, students, and foreign dignitaries, gathered to observe a 25-minute performance segmented into two phases. The first phase featured nine Hawk Mk-132 aircraft, which performed intricate formations including the ‘Diamond’, ‘Tejas’, ‘DNA’, and a heart shape, leaving saffron, white, and green smoke trails in their wake.

The excitement intensified in the second phase, where the aircraft split into smaller groups and executed daring low-altitude manoeuvres such as vertical climbs, inverted crossovers, and barrel rolls, captivating the audience.

The Sarang Helicopter Display Team complemented the fixed-wing performance by flying five indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) ‘Dhruv’ in synchronised formations, enhancing the visual spectacle further. The helicopters flew over the historic Mehrangarh Fort, merging modern aviation with the city's rich heritage.

Additionally, the display included low-level tactical flying demonstrations by some of India's premier fighter aircraft, notably the Sukhoi-30 MKI, the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, and the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand. Static displays were also available for students and National Cadet Corps cadets, featuring the Tejas, Sukhoi, Rafale, and other international fighter aircraft.

Group Captain Abhijeet Kumar, the Commanding Officer and Team Leader of the Sarang team, spoke about the importance of the team in promoting India’s aerospace capabilities. ‘Through performances in India and globally, we showcase the professionalism and progress of the Indian aviation sector,’ he stated. The Sarang team, established in 2003 during the initial induction of the ALH Dhruv, has evolved into a world-class display unit, reflecting the growth of indigenous aviation technology.

As the IAF continues to develop its capabilities, such events demonstrate not only its operational readiness but also its commitment to showcasing advancements in technology and skills on a global stage.
