Reliance Industries Responds to Elon Musk on Starlink India Entry
Reliance Industries addresses Elon Musk's remarks on Starlink's challenges in India, affirming support for competition and adherence to local laws.

Reliance Industries has issued a statement in response to comments made by Elon Musk regarding the entry of his satellite broadband company, Starlink, into the Indian market. The company emphasised that it does not fear competition but insists that all companies must comply with the laws and regulations of India.

In its statement, Reliance noted that the government treats all applications equally, whether they are from domestic or international firms. This comes as Musk has publicly criticised the regulatory hurdles Starlink faces in India. Reliance asserted that its own satellite services await official clearances, reflecting its commitment to following the appropriate procedures.

Reliance stated, “Like every Indian enterprise, Reliance has grown in an India that welcomes investment and innovation, whether homegrown or foreign, that enhances the lives of its citizens.” The firm welcomed competition in the satellite communications sector, including from SpaceX's Starlink.

Musk's criticisms included accusations of discrimination against his company, which he claims has complied with Indian regulations for five years while seeking a licence. He took to social media to express his frustration, questioning whether Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, holds undue influence over the Indian market.

On October 8, the Indian Ministry of Communications refuted Musk's claims, describing them as baseless and confirming that the satellite communication framework in India is fair and open to all. It stated that assessments regarding various applicants are currently in progress and are at a similar regulatory stage.

Reliance's response underlines its competitive ethos, referencing its own entrance into the telecommunications market in 2016 with Jio, which has since grown its customer base to over 530 million, providing affordable digital services.

In conclusion, Reliance reiterated its stance that every competitor, including Jio, must adhere to local laws while working to serve Indian consumers effectively. The ongoing exchange between Musk and Reliance highlights the complexities of entering the Indian telecommunications landscape, especially for foreign players.

As the situation unfolds, the company's commitment to competition and compliance may set the tone for future developments in India's satellite broadband sector.
