Reliance Industries aims to transform oil refining into chemical production, targeting 200,000 green jobs and sustainable growth.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced plans to convert all oil it refines into chemicals and new materials, as articulated by Chairman Mukesh Ambani at the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai. Ambani expressed that this transition would enhance the resilience and profitability of the company’s earnings.

During the meeting, he stated, “This transformation will fundamentally improve the quality, resilience, and value of our earnings. I am confident that our new Oil-to-Chemicals & Materials business will become even more valuable than our current O2C business.”

Ambani highlighted the ambition of positioning Reliance as a leading integrated energy and materials firm, prepared for a sustainable and intelligent future. "India remains one of the most favourable geographies globally for expansion," he added, emphasising the company's ability to partner with international chemical and materials firms.

He stated that Reliance is ready to develop flexible partnerships and integrated complexes both within India and internationally. This approach is underpinned by the company's extensive manufacturing capabilities, optimal cost structure, and strong financial position.

RIL is poised to create a "fully integrated green ecosystem" that will transform its traditional energy business while presenting significant opportunities for growth in both Reliance and India.

Mukesh Ambani pointed out that Reliance's diversified growth strategy includes various sectors such as bioenergy and new materials. He mentioned that the company’s New Energy initiative aims to generate two hundred thousand green jobs through projects like the Giga Complex and the Kutch Solar Farm. "Two hundred thousand Indians – engineers, technicians, operators, construction workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs – will build their livelihoods on clean energy," he stated.

He also remarked that the shift towards clean energy would not only create employment but also decrease import dependence, enhance exports, lower energy costs, and contribute to environmental conservation. "The clean energy transition will be an engine of inclusive prosperity," added Ambani, highlighting its potential benefits for Indian households and factories.

Reflecting on India’s role in the global energy landscape, Ambani noted, “The world built its old energy on Middle Eastern oil. The world will now build its new energy on Indian sunshine.”

The company's ongoing transformation emphasises its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and a robust future in the global energy market.
