Recognising Early Signs of Childhood Cancer: What Parents Need to Know
Experts urge parents to be vigilant for symptoms of childhood cancer that may appear minor but could indicate serious health issues.

Childhood cancer, while relatively rare, remains a leading cause of disease-related death among children under 15 in the UK. According to Cancer Research UK, approximately 1,900 children aged 0-14 are diagnosed with cancer annually. Early signs of the disease can mimic common ailments, making them easy to dismiss. Health professionals stress the importance of seeking medical advice when symptoms persist or worsen.

Thirteen-year-old Amelia Carroll provides a poignant example. After experiencing fatigue and breathlessness during mild activities, her mother, Gemma, initially attributed Amelia's condition to poor fitness and fatigue from school. Concerns escalated when Amelia began developing unexplained bruises. Within ten days of noticing the first bruise, doctors confirmed her diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Gemma recounts the moment when Amelia directly asked her about having cancer, a reality they had to confront together.

Amelia is now in remission, having returned to school and undergoing regular blood and bone marrow tests every three months. Her experience underscores the need for vigilance regarding subtle symptoms. Professor Bob Phillips, a paediatric oncologist, advises that parents should remain alert to clusters of symptoms such as severe tiredness, unusual paleness, and lumps or bumps that do not resolve. These indications can signal conditions that require prompt medical evaluation.

A national campaign, supported by the Children and Young People's Cancer Association (CCLG), encourages professionals to apply a “rule of three.” This rule suggests that health care providers should consider referrals for children experiencing three persistent symptoms, three visits to their doctor, or three weeks of unexplained symptoms. Despite advancements in medical care, about half of the children diagnosed with cancer in the UK receive their diagnosis within two weeks of presenting symptoms.

Phillips notes that the survival rates for childhood cancers have improved significantly since the 1970s, with around 80% of children surviving for five years or more following diagnosis. Moreover, earlier diagnosis can often result in less intensive treatment, further bolstering survival chances.

Another story that highlights the importance of awareness is that of Jake, a boy who tragically passed away from soft tissue sarcoma at the age of 13. Initially, his symptoms, which included a stuffy nose and fatigue, were thought to be unrelated. However, a subsequent swelling at the bridge of his nose prompted a visit to the general practitioner, revealing a mass in his nasal cavity. Jake underwent chemotherapy but eventually chose not to continue his treatment. His mother, Lynsey, now advocates for greater awareness of childhood cancer symptoms, hoping to ensure that his memory lives on through her efforts.

The experiences of both Amelia and Jake illustrate critical lessons about the necessity for parents to closely observe their children's health and to act decisively when faced with potential warning signs. With continued awareness and education, experts hope to improve diagnostic times and outcomes for future patients.
