Ranveer Singh Faces Boycott from Film Union Over Don 3 Exit
Ranveer Singh is boycotted by a film workers' union in India due to his alleged withdrawal from Don 3, after significant funds were allocated.

The Bollywood community is stirring following a decision by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) to boycott actor Ranveer Singh. This comes after Singh's reported withdrawal from the anticipated film Don 3, a move that has left many fans in disbelief.

FWICE, representing thousands of film industry workers, announced that it has advised its members against collaborating with Singh pending an explanation regarding his departure from the project. It was revealed that producers had committed approximately 450 million rupees (around £3.4 million or $4.7 million) to pre-production before the actor allegedly stepped back from the role.

President of FWICE BN Tiwari stated that Singh had not responded to repeated requests for clarification on his exit. Tiwari emphasised, "We've decided to send a message to the industry that a superstar is not bigger than the rules." Although the union's action does not constitute a formal ban, it has garnered significant media attention owing to Singh's high profile and the franchise's historical significance.

The Don series has been a staple of Indian cinema since its inception in 1978, originally featuring Amitabh Bachchan and later receiving a reboot with Shah Rukh Khan as the lead. Don 3 was announced in 2023, with Singh set to take on the pivotal role.

This controversy has sparked renewed discussions about Singh, known for his roles in notable films such as Padmaavat and Gully Boy, as well as his vibrant public persona. His latest project, Dhurandhar, achieved commercial success, further elevating his status in the film industry.

Reports indicate that filmmaker Farhan Akhtar lodged the complaint that triggered FWICE's intervention. According to union official Ashoke Pandit, Singh's withdrawal occurred just three weeks ahead of the planned filming, causing financial strain for the production team.

In light of Singh's refusal to meet with FWICE, the union's directive signifies a notable breach in the relationship between top-tier actors and industry protocols. A spokesperson for Singh commented that the actor has immense respect for the industry and the Don series, choosing a quiet stance on the unfolding issue. The BBC has reached out to Singh’s team for further clarification but has yet to receive a response.

Historically, FWICE has imposed similar directives in the past, albeit infrequently against major stars. Notably, the union previously urged its members to avoid collaborating with Pakistani artists during periods of geopolitical tension. In 2025, they directed that Indian actors refrain from projects involving singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh based on his collaboration with a Pakistani actress.

Reactions to the boycott have varied online, with many voicing opinions on social media. Some commentators believe that Singh's case is an example of undue punishment, noting that other actors have previously exited projects without facing similar repercussions. Conversely, other voices support the decision, asserting that the integrity of large-scale productions must be safeguarded against last-minute withdrawals from significant roles.

Controversy is not new for Singh; he faced criticism in 2025 for mimicking a significant cultural ritual from the Kannada film Kantara at a film festival. Following backlash, he issued an apology over concerns regarding cultural respect.

In 2015, Singh was also among those involved in a contentious comedy roast that led to public outcry, police complaints, and debates surrounding free speech.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how it will impact Singh's career and the future of the Don franchise.
