Ranveer Singh Faces Backlash for Mimicking Kantara Scene at IFFI
Ranveer Singh sparks controversy after imitating a scene from 'Kantara' at IFFI, leading to social media backlash over cultural insensitivity.

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has come under fire following his appearance at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa. While he received praise for recognising the contributions of legendary Indian actor Rajinikanth, his actions during a tribute to the film 'Kantara' sparked considerable outrage online.

During the event, which took place on November 28, 2025, Ranveer Singh expressed admiration for Rishab Shetty, the director and lead actor of 'Kantara'. He referred to a pivotal character in the film, Chaundi, as a 'female ghost' and proceeded to mimic a scene from the movie on stage. The actor’s portrayal involved exaggerated facial expressions and vocalisations, which elicited laughter from the audience present.

However, as a video of the performance circulated on social media, many viewers deemed his antics disrespectful, particularly towards the cultural significance of the character and the traditions it represents. One user on the platform X remarked, "Ranveer's imitation of the Kantara scene felt unnecessary and disrespectful," while others echoed similar sentiments, expressing disappointment over his portrayal of a revered figure in the local culture.

Another comment highlighted the insensitivity, stating, "Ranveer Singh literally mocking Daiva Chaundi possession in Kantara. How low can these movie stars go for fame and money with zero respect for sacred beliefs?" Such reactions underline a growing concern regarding cultural sensitivity among public figures, particularly in a country as diverse as India.

Reports indicate that Rishab Shetty had advised Ranveer against mimicking the deity prior to the event. A source revealed that Shetty requested the actor to refrain from performing the act, although Ranveer reportedly continued despite this caution. The incident has ignited a debate about the responsibilities of entertainers and the boundaries of comedic expression in relation to cultural themes.

As the controversy unfolded, both Ranveer Singh and Rishab Shetty have remained silent regarding the backlash. The timing of this incident is particularly noteworthy as Ranveer Singh is set to release his upcoming film, 'Dhurandhar', on December 5, 2025. The film promises to showcase a different aspect of the actor, featuring him in a rugged, action-oriented role.

In contrast, 'Kantara', released in October 2022, has already proven to be a significant cinematic success, grossing over ₹851.93 crore worldwide. The film delves into themes of ancestral conflict and local traditions, resonating with audiences and securing its place as one of the top-grossing films of the year.

As discussions surrounding this incident continue, it raises important questions about the intersection of entertainment and cultural respect, especially in a country where diverse traditions and beliefs are deeply woven into the fabric of society.
