Rahul Gandhi Meets Gym Trainer Who Faced Harassment in Uttarakhand
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, recently met with Mohammad Deepak, a gym trainer from Uttarakhand, who became notable after confronting right-wing activists. This encounter took place on February 23, 2026, at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.
The incident that brought Mohammad Deepak to public attention occurred on Republic Day, January 26, 2026. During this event, he defended a 71-year-old Muslim garment seller who faced pressure from members of the Bajrang Dal and the Vishva Hindu Parishad, who insisted that the seller change the name of his shop. Responding to these demands, Deepak identified himself as ‘Mohammad’ Deepak, illustrating solidarity against the harassment.
In a statement after the meeting, Deepak expressed gratitude towards Rahul Gandhi, noting that the Congress leader offered support to him and reassurance to his family, who were afraid following the confrontation. “Rahul ji said that he will come to Kotdwar and take membership in my gym... He assured me that I am not alone in this fight,” Deepak said.
The Congress Party shared images of the meeting on social media, celebrating Deepak’s actions as a representation of unity and courage that could inspire youth across India. The caption accompanying the images referred to Deepak and Gandhi as “Do Bhai, Mohabbat Ke Sipahi,” translated as “two brothers, soldiers of love.”
Deepak operates a gym named ‘Hulk’ in Kotdwar, which he noted has experienced negative impacts on business following the incident, particularly due to the ongoing protests from right-wing groups. Alongside his friend Vijay Rawat, who stood by him during the confrontation, Deepak has garnered widespread support throughout the country in response to his actions.
In previous comments regarding the incident, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the importance of equality and unity in the cultural fabric of India, reflecting the values that should be upheld by the youth. Deepak also announced plans for a national march, dubbed the “Insaniyat Jodo Yatra” or “Unite Humanity March,” aimed at promoting harmony in society.
This meeting has further solidified public interest in the ongoing conversation about societal unity against divisive actions, focusing on the need for collective resistance against hostility and hatred within communities.
