Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing for a state visit, receiving a red carpet welcome from Chinese leaders. This visit marks significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations as they navigate a complex international landscape. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised the necessity for strategic coordination between China and Russia during their meeting at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi highlighted the importance of the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership, emphasising the need for both countries to drive their development through enhanced collaboration. He stated, “China-Russia relations have come this far step by step precisely because we have kept deepening political mutual trust and strategic coordination.”

The two leaders discussed various cooperation areas, including trade, energy, and international security, recognising the challenges posed by a fluctuating global environment. Xi pointed out that while unilateralism and hegemonism are on the rise, peace and cooperation remain the aspirations of people worldwide. He called on both nations to maintain a strategic and long-term perspective to ensure their respective revitalisation and to foster a fair global governance system.

During the talks, Putin acknowledged the unprecedented level of bilateral relations, which he attributed to mutual political trust and high-level exchanges. He reiterated the importance of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, stating that it is particularly relevant in today’s context.

Following the discussions, Xi and Putin signed a joint statement aimed at enhancing their cooperative frameworks, detailing commitments in various sectors including education, technology, and economic ties. They also witnessed the formalisation of 20 cooperation agreements, showcasing the commitment to deepen their partnership further.

Moreover, the leaders exchanged views on global issues, including Middle Eastern stability and international collaborative efforts. Both leaders highlighted their commitment to multilateralism and affirmed the importance of organisations such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS in maintaining global stability.

The meeting underscores the burgeoning ties between China and Russia as both leaders seek to solidify their partnership against a backdrop of shifting geopolitical alliances. Their shared goals highlight a concerted effort to strengthen cooperation in a world increasingly fraught with challenges.
