Punjab Government Issues Show-Cause Notices to Absent Employees
In response to the recent 'Maha Hartal', Punjab's government demands accountability from striking employees with disciplinary actions planned.

The Punjab Government has initiated steps to address the recent mass absence of state employees during the 'Maha Hartal' protest. On August 27, a significant number of government staff and pensioners participated in a strike, advocating for a range of demands including the release of pending dearness allowances and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme. To respond to this action, the government has instructed all administrative secretaries and department heads to issue show-cause notices to those who were unlawfully absent from work on that day.

The authorities have been advised to enforce strict disciplinary measures in accordance with the applicable rules against participants in the strike. The protest was part of a larger movement aimed at addressing longstanding service-related issues.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had been scheduled to hold discussions with union leaders in Jalandhar on the day of the strike. However, he subsequently cancelled these talks, stating that negotiations could not proceed while employees were participating in the strike. In a social media update, Chief Minister Mann expressed the government’s commitment to resolving the issues raised by employees, reiterating that dialogue would not occur simultaneously with protests. This stance highlights the delicate balance between the rights of employees to protest and the government's duty to maintain public services.

The 'Maha Hartal' saw the participation of lakhs of employees, signalling widespread dissatisfaction regarding ongoing issues, particularly concerning financial allowances and pension schemes. The government is now faced with the challenge of addressing these concerns while ensuring that administrative protocols are upheld. As the situation develops, the government remains under pressure to respond to the demands of its workforce effectively while navigating the complexities of public sector labour relations.
