Public Reprimand of Daler Mehndi Sparks Controversy in Uttarakhand
Daler Mehndi, a renowned Indian singer, has come under scrutiny following an incident during a cultural event in Uttarakhand. The singer was publicly rebuked by Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal during a performance at the Kunjapuri Fair in Tehri district. Uniyal accused Mehndi of performing while allegedly intoxicated, raising eyebrows and prompting widespread reactions.
The incident occurred during a Navratri celebration, where Uniyal confronted Mehndi on stage. He claimed that the singer, who had reportedly been paid Rs 35 lakh for his performance, appeared disoriented and unable to perform adequately. "You are making a fool of us. This is wrong," Uniyal remarked, expressing frustration at the singer's lack of professionalism.
In response to the accusations, Mehndi's brother, singer Mika Singh, defended him vehemently, stating that Daler does not consume alcohol and had performed despite being unwell after a significant surgery. On social media, Mika demanded proof of Uniyal's claims regarding the financial payment, urging the minister to publicly disclose any records of the transaction. "Did you pay Rs 35 lakh in cash or by cheque? If you have the receipts, then please present them in public so people can know the truth," Mika questioned.
Mika Singh continued to support Daler Mehndi, explaining that artists often perform in challenging conditions and that outbursts like Uniyal's are inappropriate. He compared the incident to a teacher reprimanding a student, emphasising the need for respect for established artists. "If a teacher scolds a student, it becomes a big issue. Then how is it okay to insult an artiste of such calibre in this way?" Mika added.
Following the public confrontation, videos of the incident circulated widely, stirring a mix of mockery and outrage among fans and supporters. The backlash prompted several celebrities from the music industry to rally behind Mehndi, condemning the treatment he received.
Mika not only voiced his support but also expressed concerns regarding the treatment of artists in the entertainment industry. He appealed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for an investigation into Uniyal's conduct at the event.
Uniyal maintained that his comments were based on Mehndi’s performance quality and reiterated his frustrations about the singer's apparent inability to engage with the audience during the show. "He is a big artiste. If he doesn’t do justice to his art, that should be questioned," Uniyal stated, justifying his actions during the performance.
While Daler Mehndi has yet to comment publicly following the incident, he is also known for his recent work, including a reprisal of his song in an upcoming film. The situation has sparked a debate over respect for artists and the pressures they face in live performance settings, further highlighting the complexities of live entertainment.
This unfolding drama points towards a significant concern regarding the treatment of artists in India, especially in public settings, and raises questions about accountability and professionalism in the entertainment industry.
