Protests Planned Against Special Intensive Revision in India
Farmers' unions and trade groups prepare protests across India against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demand political reforms.

In a coordinated effort, various farmers' unions and trade groups are set to demonstrate against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in India. This nationwide initiative is spearheaded by the newly formed coalition, People Against SIR, which includes representatives from farmers, students, and civil society.

The protests are scheduled for October 23 in multiple cities, including the national capital, New Delhi, where the march will commence from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara to the Election Commission of India office. Organisers have stated that they will not seek prior police permission for the events, as they aim to assert their right to peaceful assembly.

The coalition has publicly expressed its dissatisfaction with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's actions, accusing him of undermining democratic processes.

Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, along with other prominent figures such as student leaders Neha Bora and Aishe Ghosh, is among those scheduled to attend the march. Actor and activist Prakash Raj, along with farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and author Tushar Gandhi, are also invited participants in the protests.

As reported by Hindustan Times, the group has emphasised that their activities are focused on restoring democracy, mindful of the legal ramifications regarding section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which prohibits public gatherings without explicit permission from authorities.

The coalition’s statements reveal multiple grievances against the electoral process under the current regime, particularly targeting the legitimacy of the ongoing SIR exercise. They demand the reversion of voter lists to their status prior to 2024 and call for social audits as mandated by existing guidelines from the Election Commission and the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

The protests come in light of recent crackdowns on previous anti-SIR demonstrations. During a similar protest on October 10, police detained several members of the coalition, including Dipke, Das, and Ranka, who were held just before their planned demonstration. Previous instances of civil dissent have resulted in substantial police presence, aimed at preventing large gatherings in areas like Jantar Mantar, which has been another site for protests.

The People Against SIR coalition, which was established on October 14, has called for broad involvement from diverse groups including workers, women, Adivasis, Dalits, and minorities. They have articulated a comprehensive list of demands, including the removal of Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of legal protections currently afforded to the Election Commission of India. According to the alliance, Kumar has breached his constitutional pledge and should face litigation.

As recorded by multiple sources, the events reflect growing tensions surrounding democratic practices in the country. Supporters of the protests contend that they highlight the need for substantial electoral reform and the reinstatement of transparency in the electoral process. As the march approaches, observers will be watching to see how the authorities respond to these planned protests and whether the demonstrators will be able to exercise their right to assembly without confrontation.
