Protests Erupt in Manipur Following Militant Attack on Locals
Violence erupted in Imphal, Manipur, as protestors placed the bodies of two men outside the residence of Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh. This demonstration came after the men were allegedly killed by suspected militants. The incident occurred on a Monday morning when Arubam Ronil, 35, and Lairenlakpam Inaobi, 51, were ambushed while collecting firewood in a forested area between Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts.
The ambush reportedly took place around 7 am at Khongbal Sunurok Uyok, close to Nongshum village. Members of the group, of which the deceased were part, were caught in gunfire, resulting in four others being injured. One of the injured, identified as Ksh Deven, is in serious condition, while three individuals remain unaccounted for.
In the wake of the killings, local residents transported the bodies to Imphal, symbolically placing them outside the chief minister's residence in Babupara. Their actions were intended to voice outrage over the ongoing violence in the region. Upon the arrival of the bodies, security personnel unexpectedly confronted the situation and deployed tear gas in an effort to disperse the gathered protesters.
The deceased were later transported to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for further procedures. As of now, it remains unclear whether Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh was present at his residence during the demonstration.
This latest development occurs against the backdrop of escalating ethnic tensions in Manipur, which has faced significant unrest since May 2023. The ongoing violence has drawn widespread attention and condemnation, raising concerns over public safety and the need for conflict resolution in the state.
Sources indicate that local authorities continue to grapple with the ramifications of this unrest, making appeals for calm amidst the mounting tensions. The situation remains fluid as stakeholders seek to address the underlying issues contributing to the violence.
