Protests Erupt in Jharkhand Over Recruitment Exam Irregularities
Students in Jharkhand protest alleged recruitment fraud, burning effigies of key political figures and demanding reforms.

Protests across Jharkhand have intensified due to claims of irregularities in recruitment examinations. On Sunday, members of the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch set fire to effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav in Ranchi at Albert Ekka Chowk. The protesters accused the government and its allies of neglecting their demands for recruitment reforms and an investigation into the alleged exam discrepancies.

This demonstration is part of a planned protest strategy. Activists have stated that they have tried peaceful measures for weeks, but without satisfactory government responses. The protest movement, which has persisted for 23 days, calls for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the alleged recruitment examination irregularities, cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam, accountability for those responsible, and enhanced transparency in the recruitment process in the state.

Earlier that day, demonstrators held a torchlight rally from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk, culminating in the effigy-burning. Similar protests were reported in various districts throughout Jharkhand. Protesters highlighted the lack of pressure from Congress and RJD leaders on the government, asserting that their support for students has not resulted in meaningful action.

The movement has escalated, with students continuing a sit-in and several participants on indefinite hunger strikes. Uncertainty hangs over many aspirants regarding their future, as activists accuse the government of delaying crucial resolutions. In response, the Jharkhand government has invited student representatives for another round of discussions set for Monday, marking the seventh meeting between both parties. Previous negotiations have not reached an agreement.

Efforts announced by the government to improve recruitment examination transparency include establishing a clear examination calendar, implementing technology safeguards, timely publication of answer keys and OMR sheets, and requiring stricter accountability measures. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has insisted that any allegations will be investigated thoroughly, promising action against those found guilty.

Despite these assurances, protest leaders remain sceptical. Ravindra Paswan, a forum leader, indicated that the movement could shift from non-violent methods to more aggressive tactics if their demands continue to be ignored. He questioned Rahul Gandhi’s inability to effect change if he genuinely supports the students. The protest forum has issued an ultimatum, threatening to encircle the Chief Minister's residence in Ranchi on August 20 if their demands are not addressed by August 18.
