Activist Tehseen Poonawalla leads protests against E20 fuel, demanding a meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to present vehicle damage cases.

Protests surrounding the government's rollout of E20 ethanol-blended petrol are intensifying. Following Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's recent challenge for critics to identify individuals adversely affected by the biofuel, activist Tehseen Poonawalla has asserted that he can produce six such cases, provided the meeting occurs in the presence of media. The controversy began when the Indian government made E20, which contains 20% ethanol, the mandatory petrol blend, even though around 80% of vehicles are designed for the previous 10% blend, known as E10.

Poonawalla's protests, mounted under the banner of Team Bharat, stem from widespread reports of reduced mileage and vehicle damage attributed to E20. In a video message, Poonawalla expressed frustration at the impossibility of directly approaching Gadkari's residence, citing concerns of police intervention.

"We are ready to hold this meeting, but we cannot visit you. If we do, we risk detention," he stated. Poonawalla further emphasised that media presence is crucial during such discussions to ensure transparency about the situations faced by affected vehicle owners.

Minister Gadkari, when approached by reporters, insisted that no evidence currently supports the claims that E20 has damaged vehicles, reiterating that his department welcomes consumer feedback for investigations. "No one has proven that E20 caused damage to any petrol vehicle," he said, emphasising the government's commitment to addressing any valid concerns through the established channels.

The introduction of E20 aims to reduce reliance on imported crude oil and contribute to environmental goals by cutting emissions. However, many consumers have voiced dissatisfaction, claiming increased wear on their vehicles and declining fuel efficiency. Notably, reports suggest a mileage drop of between 10% to 20% in vehicles designed primarily for lower ethanol blends.

Poonawalla has labelled Gadkari's explanation of his family's minimal stake in the ethanol industry as insufficient, suggesting it represents a conflict of interest due to the significant profits generated through their involvement in production. He remarked, "Your family may hold a small percentage, but that still translates to substantial earnings annually."

The Ethanol Blended Petrol initiative is part of a broader strategy that began with the National Policy on Biofuels in 2018, intending to achieve 20% blending by 2030. The government expedited this timeline, achieving the target five years ahead of schedule as of December 2025. Critics argue that this rapid transition to E20 lacks adequate preparation, particularly as more than 75% of vehicles in India are reportedly not compatible with the new fuel blend.

Automotive studies have highlighted potential risks associated with E20 usage, exemplifying that older vehicles not designed for such blends may suffer from increased fuel system wear and the degradation of rubber components. While the government maintains that extensive testing supports the safety and efficacy of E20, many motorists express concerns over long-term impacts.

Gadkari countered claims of widespread profit for his family, addressing inquiries about conflict of interest emphatically by stating his minimal stake in the ethanol production sector. He added, "The entire process is a government initiative, framed collectively."

As public concern grows, the demonstration at Jantar Mantar showcased not only Poonawalla's claims but also the broader sentiment of motorists unhappy with the shift to E20. Protesters argue they are not opposing the concept of ethanol blending; their main concern lies in the impact on millions of vehicles unsuitable for the new fuel, highlighting the need for better communication and consumer choices.

The debate over the E20 rollout is expected to intensify as more vehicle owners voice their experiences, and as Poonawalla and Team Bharat prepare to present their evidence to the government in an anticipated meeting with Minister Gadkari.
