Prostate Cancer Awareness: Urgent Call for Early Detection Among Men
An urgent appeal highlights the necessity for men over 50 to undergo regular screenings for prostate cancer.

Cal Thomas, an American commentator, has shared his personal experience with prostate cancer to highlight the importance of early detection for men over 50. In a candid account, he described how a gradual increase in his prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels led to a serious diagnosis. Thomas explained that, despite awareness about the significance of early detection, many men tend to delay seeking medical advice, which could prove detrimental to their health.

His PSA levels had been steadily rising over two years, reaching 9.0, accompanied by a Gleason score of 9, indicating a higher risk of aggressive cancer. Following a prostate biopsy, he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour pressing against his rectal wall. He was presented with two main treatment options: the complete removal of the prostate gland or a combination of radiation therapy and hormone treatment, opting for the latter.

After completing 38 sessions of radiation therapy, Thomas reported that his PSA levels have dropped to zero, suggesting that the tumour appears to have disappeared. He now remains on hormone therapy for an additional two years to ensure continued monitoring and treatment.

Citing statistics from the American Cancer Society, Thomas noted that an estimated 333,830 new cases of prostate cancer and approximately 36,320 associated deaths are expected in the United States this year. The likelihood of a man being diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in his life is about 1 in 8, or 13 percent. Notably, black men are at higher risk, both for diagnosis and mortality due to prostate cancer.

Thomas emphasised that when prostate cancer is detected early and has not spread beyond the prostate, the survival rate stands at an impressive 99 percent. As the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States, behind only lung cancer, the significance of early detection cannot be stressed enough.

In his narrative, Thomas pointed out that many men share a reluctance to visit doctors for health screenings concerning their prostate and other sensitive areas. He warned that denial can lead to dire consequences, allowing cancer to progress beyond treatable stages. While acknowledging potential side effects from treatments—such as urinary difficulties, constipation, and loss of libido—he underscored the importance of facing these risks.

In reflection, Thomas recognised the value of having attentive and skilled medical professionals, recounting his positive experiences with the staff at the Miami Cancer Institute in Florida. He encouraged both men and women, particularly those with loved ones at risk, to prioritise these critical health checks.

As his prognosis looks positive, Thomas conveyed a sense of gratitude towards his medical team, his wife, and a higher power, supporting his recovery journey. His heartfelt message serves as a call to action for all men, urging them to be proactive in their health management, noting, 'Denial is not a cure.' The narrative closes with a reminder: early diagnosis can make all the difference in treatment outcomes.
