The Union government of India has announced the recipients of the prestigious Padma Awards for the year 2026 on the eve of Republic Day. This honour is awarded annually to individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields, including the arts, social work, and public service.

Among the distinguished recipients this year are former Chief Minister of Kerala, V S Achuthanandan, celebrated actor Mammootty, and Vellappally Natesan, the general secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham (SNDP Yogam). These individuals have been recognised for their enduring impact in their respective areas.

V S Achuthanandan is known for his long-standing political career and his contributions to the welfare of the people in Kerala. His tenure as Chief Minister was marked by several initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, and the rights of the downtrodden.

Mammootty, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, has garnered acclaim not only for his acting prowess but also for his philanthropic efforts. Over decades, he has appeared in numerous films that have left a lasting impression on audiences across the globe.

Vellappally Natesan has played a pivotal role in promoting social justice and education among the underprivileged. As the head of SNDP Yogam, he has championed the rights of the backward classes in Kerala and has been instrumental in various social initiatives.

The Padma Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the diversity and talent within Indian society. Receiving such an honour not only highlights individual achievements but also draws attention to the cultural richness of the nation.

In response to the announcement of the awards, a spokesperson from the government remarked, "These awards are a tribute to the individuals who have dedicated their lives to elevating the human condition."

The Padma Awards hold significant importance in India, representing the highest civilian honours bestowed by the government. As the nation prepares to celebrate Republic Day, the recognition of these luminaries serves as a reminder of the diverse contributions made by its citizens.
