Premier Energies Launches Major Solar Manufacturing Complex in Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada: The establishment of a Rs 5,942 crore solar manufacturing complex by Premier Energies at the Naidupeta Industrial Park in Nellore district marks a significant advancement in Andhra Pradesh's clean energy initiatives. Nara Lokesh, the stateâs Minister for Information Technology, announced the project, which is expected to bolster the local economy and enhance India's solar energy capabilities.
Strategic Development
Minister Lokesh described the project as a testament to the speed and clarity of Andhra Pradesh's governance, which adopts an investor-first approach. He outlined how the initiative represents a major milestone for the state, designed to strengthen the solar value chain amidst global supply challenges. The groundwork began in October 2024, with focused discussions on developing upstream capabilities that include solar cells, ingots, and wafers.
The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has expedited the allocation of land for the project, securing 269 acres swiftly. By February 2025, 169.71 acres had been officially allotted, with an additional 100 acres approved in principle. This rapid land allocation, coupled with robust infrastructure and immediate port access, has instilled confidence in Premier Energies to centralise its operations in a single scalable location.
Technological Integration
The new facility will feature a 4 GW TOPCon solar cell line alongside a 5 GW silicon ingot and wafer manufacturing plant. This strategic co-location is aimed at ensuring backward integration, enhancing process control, and reducing costs for both domestic and export markets. Lokesh noted that this approach not only complements the existing capacities of Premier Energies but also positions India favourably within the competitive landscape of next-generation photovoltaic technologies.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The complex is expected to generate approximately 3,500 direct jobs, along with significant indirect employment opportunities as ancillary industries expand. Plans for a phased scale-up to 7 GW have also been discussed to accommodate rising demand in the solar sector. The minister highlighted that this project could serve as a catalyst for green jobs and a robust manufacturing ecosystem that would benefit micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), logistics, and service sectors.
Rationale for Location
In discussing the rationale behind selecting Naidupeta, Lokesh pointed to the area's proximity to ports, reliable infrastructure, and the state's port-led industrial strategy. He emphasised that these factors were crucial in minimising risks associated with upstream solar manufacturing, enabling rapid commissioning of the facility. The strategic site selection was meticulously planned to optimise freight, energy, water, and human resources.
Broader Vision
Lokesh positioned this development within a broader context, stating that Andhra Pradesh is actively constructing a renewable manufacturing corridor aimed at advancing self-reliance and enhancing global competitiveness in solar exports. He reaffirmed the state's dedication to implementing investor-friendly reforms, offering competitive incentives, and ensuring seamless facilitation for businesses.
âPremier Energiesâ journey in Andhra Pradesh exemplifies speed with substance,â Lokesh remarked. âFrom the outset, we have focused on integration, logistics, and timelines to deliver results. This is how Andhra Pradesh will spearhead clean energy manufacturingâby transforming intent into tangible assets, swiftly.â
