Political Turmoil in Maharashtra: UBT Rebels Demand Separation
The situation within the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) intensified recently, as dissident lawmakers voiced concerns regarding a potential merger with the Indian National Congress. This discord prompted the Maharashtra government to increase security for six MPs involved in the dissent. This development represents the third significant division in Maharashtra's political landscape over the last four years, following splits from both the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
The unrest follows recent actions from the Trinamool Congress as 20 rebellious MPs suggested aligning with the Nationalist Congress Party and supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance. This has raised speculation concerning further political congregations.
The discontent surfaced during a parliamentary gathering in New Delhi, where six out of nine Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MPs failed to attend, despite a directive from party leaders. The assembly aimed to reinforce support for Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and explore options to prevent a split. The absence of the six MPs was telling, given that, under the anti-defection law, a minimum of two-thirds of lawmakers is required to constitute a separate faction, avoiding disqualification.
Only three MPs, namely Arvind Sawant, Anil Desai, and Rajabhau Waje, were present. In an indication of their intentions, the rebels submitted a letter to be recognised as a distinct group, setting the stage for a possible merger with the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Several Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs expressed a belief that the party was aligning too closely with Congress, spurring the need for separation.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske remarked that numerous MPs had attempted to engage with Uddhav Thackeray through Arvind Sawant but felt ignored. Mhaske alleged that some party figures were acting in favour of Congress and encapsulated the sentiment by stating his concerns regarding a potential merger.
Further exacerbating tensions, rebel MPs have cited comments from Shiv Sena member Sanjay Raut, who allegedly suggested that Trinamool Congress should merge with Congress, reinforcing fears of a similar fate for the Shiv Sena (UBT). The rebels showed a preference for merging with the faction under Shinde instead.
Amid this political strife, Sanjay Raut continued to lambast those opposing the leadership. He labelled the absentee MPs as 'traitors' and accused them of dishonesty. This followed critiques from other party spokespersons, including Sheetal Mhatre, who argued for greater engagement with discontented MPs rather than threats. Mhatre suggested that the party's strategy could damage the Shiv Sena (UBT).
Raut also issued warnings about the legal repercussions resulting from any non-compliance with party directives. He asserted that these MPs benefited from the party's name and symbol during elections and that betrayal would have significant political ramifications.
In response to the unrest, the Maharashtra Intelligence Department allocated enhanced security classified as Y-plus for the six rebel MPs: Sanjay Dina Patil, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, Om Raje Nimbalkar, Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Sanjay Deshmukh, and Sanjay Jadhav, citing possible threats. This decision fell under the jurisdiction of State Intelligence Commissioner Shirish Jain, who authorised local authorities to adjust security measures according to the evolving landscape of the situation.
Raut remarked pointedly at the rebels, challenging their resolve to operate without security details, which he deemed necessary due to rising tensions.
The unfolding situation highlights the complexities of Maharashtra's political landscape, with opposition factions wrestling for influence amidst fears of possible mergers and enhanced security provisions for dissenting lawmakers.
