Political Tensions Rise as INDIA Bloc Protests Election Chief
In a dramatic turn of events in New Delhi, members of the INDIA bloc staged a protest on Tuesday aimed at the Election Commission of India (ECI) and its Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition coalition, comprising various political parties, marched to Akashvani Bhavan, demanding Kumar's resignation due to alleged facilitation of 'vote theft'. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat of hijacking the nation's electoral integrity with Kumar's assistance.
During a media briefing, Gandhi claimed, "The whole country believes this, the youth of the country also believe this." He and other leaders expressed frustration over police barriers that prevented them from reaching the ECI office, only a short distance from their location. Protests have been ongoing for several days, with accusations of deletion impacting nearly 13 crore (130 million) voters during the Special Identity Review process.
The BJP responded to the protests by accusing Congress and its allies of inciting chaos as part of a strategy to revive Rahul Gandhi's political image. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned the motives behind Congress's push to grant voting rights to absentee, shifted, deceased, and duplicate voters without adequate verification. He remarked, "What is the Congress's intention behind giving voting rights without any verification, and whom does it want to benefit?"
The controversy escalated earlier this month after reports alleged that election commissioners Vivek Joshi and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu had repeatedly objected to various decisions made by the ECI, raising concerns about internal governance. As the protests continued, the political landscape became increasingly fraught, with several demonstrations leading to detentions by police.
On the fifth day of protests, opposition leaders, including those from the Samajwadi Party and the Trinamool Congress, faced police action that resulted in multiple arrests. Notably, the Biju Janata Dal party indicated its intent to join the protests in solidarity with the INDIA bloc, highlighting the growing momentum against the election commission's leadership. Manas Mangaraj, the party's Parliamentary Party leader in the Rajya Sabha, confirmed that MPs would participate following direction from party president Naveen Patnaik.
As tensions rise, public and political reactions continue to evolve regarding the alleged electoral discrepancies and the ECI's role in upholding democratic principles. The situation remains fluid, with calls for investigations and reforms gaining traction across various segments of Indian society.
