PM Modi Urges Opposition to Focus on Productivity in Parliament
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Monday, stating that India has demonstrated the efficacy of democracy, particularly highlighting the significant voter turnout in the recent Bihar elections. Modi noted that the participation of women in these elections exemplifies the strength of Indian democracy. In his remarks, he directed a critique towards the Opposition, urging them to refrain from what he described as 'drama' and instead focus on delivering results during the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
Reflecting on the recent electoral outcomes, Modi urged opposition leaders not to be disheartened by their performance in the Bihar assembly elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, part of the National Democratic Alliance, achieved a resounding victory by securing 202 out of 243 seats. In contrast, the Congress-led Mahagathbandhan, also referred to as the INDIA bloc, managed to win only 35 seats.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi stated, "India has proven that democracy can deliver," as he called for a productive session in Parliament. He expressed hope that the Opposition would come to terms with their electoral losses over time, though he suggested that their public comments indicate ongoing distress.
Modi offered what he termed 'tips' for the Opposition to enhance their parliamentary performance, advocating for a reassessment of their strategies following their electoral defeat. He urged them to approach the Winter Session with a commitment to constructive engagement rather than theatrical displays.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which commenced on Monday, is expected to be contentious, particularly with the Opposition insisting on a debate regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The government has introduced a legislative agenda that includes ten new bills and a discussion commemorating 150 years of the national song, Vande Mataram.
During preliminary meetings held on Sunday, including an all-party meeting led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the SIR debate emerged as a focal point for the Opposition. Samajwadi Party lawmaker Ramgopal Yadav emphasised that the House would not function properly without a discussion on SIR. Other Opposition figures indicated that it would be the government's responsibility if parliamentary proceedings were disrupted.
In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju assured that no leader had threatened to impede the functioning of the House over the SIR issue. He remarked, "On behalf of the government, I assure that we will continue to discuss in order to run smoothly. In democracy, there are differences between the parties. Despite differences, the House should not be disturbed to improve productivity."
The Winter Session is scheduled to conclude on December 19, and the discussions in the coming weeks will likely reflect the tensions between the ruling party and the Opposition, especially regarding electoral reforms and legislative priorities.
