PM Modi and Austria's Chancellor Discuss Global Peace and Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India met with Dr Christian Stocker, the Federal Chancellor of Austria, in New Delhi on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The discussions focused on the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully, particularly in West Asia and Ukraine. Both leaders expressed a firm belief that military action is not a viable solution to the issues faced in these regions. In a joint statement, Prime Minister Modi commented, "India and Austria are unanimous in this tense global environment that military conflict cannot solve problems. Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we support a stable, sustainable, lasting peace."

Moreover, they highlighted a shared commitment to eradicate terrorism from its roots. Modi noted the necessity of reforming global institutions to better tackle increasing global challenges. He remarked, "We are also unanimous that reform of the global institution is necessary to address the growing global challenges and it is our shared commitment to eradicate terrorism from its roots."

In addition to discussions on conflict resolution, the meeting touched upon strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including defence, semiconductor technology, quantum computing, and biotechnology. Modi stated that the collaboration between Austria's expertise and India's speed and scale would ensure reliable technology and supply chains globally.

He noted that Chancellor Stocker’s visit would bring renewed energy to trade and investment initiatives between the two nations, emphasising the significance of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Montan University in Austria as a prime example of academic collaboration. Furthermore, Modi referenced the comprehensive migration and mobility agreement signed in 2023, stating that efforts would also advance mobility within the nursing sector.

On a broader scale, Modi expressed optimism about an upcoming visit to Austria, marking the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years, suggesting that ongoing high-level exchanges signify the growing depth of bilateral ties. The Austrian Chancellor’s visit is particularly notable as it marks his inaugural trip to India and his first official engagement in Asia since taking office in 2025. Both leaders expressed their commitment to establishing a more innovation-driven and future-ready partnership as they look forward to maximising opportunities for collaboration in research and startup initiatives.
