Physical Activity Linked to Lower Stroke Risk in Atrial Fibrillation
Research indicates that physical activity can significantly lower the risk of stroke and premature death, particularly for individuals with atrial fibrillation (afib), a common heart rhythm disorder. An August 2026 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association included over 87,340 participants aged 30 to 99 from Norway. Among them, 6,539 individuals were diagnosed with afib and receiving standard medical treatment.
The study tracked participants for a median of 13.5 years, capturing data on stroke incidence and deaths via national health registries. Participants self-reported their exercise habits, which researchers classified into four distinct activity levels: inactive, low, moderate, and high.
Those in the moderate activity group adhered to current guidelines, engaging in moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes almost daily. Conversely, the low group participated in moderate-intensity exercise for less than 15 minutes each day, while individuals in the high group exercised vigorously for 30 minutes almost daily.
The findings revealed that compared to inactive individuals, moderate and high levels of activity decreased the risk of stroke by nearly 20%. Even minimal physical activity was associated with a 9% reduction in risk. Notably, varying activity levels had corresponding effects on mortality risk: low activity linked to an 11% reduction, moderate to an 18% reduction, and high to a 22% reduction.
The research highlights similar benefits for both individuals with and without afib, suggesting that physical activity may mitigate the stroke risk associated with this heart condition. Specifically, active individuals with afib were found to live, on average, between six to 14 months longer than their inactive counterparts.
Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist, underscored the importance of physical activity, stating, "You don’t have to be a marathoner to reap the benefits. Any movement beats none, and more is generally better." He noted that individuals with afib displayed longevity improvements correlating with their activity levels: gains of 0.5 years for low activity, 0.66 years for moderate, and up to 1.15 years for high activity levels.
This study reinforces the critical role of exercise in overall health and particularly in the management of afib. It serves as a compelling reminder for individuals to incorporate even minimal physical activity into their daily routines to enhance health outcomes and quality of life.
