Phil Salt's Availability Uncertain for RCB's IPL 2026 Qualifier 1
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are currently assessing the fitness of their opening batter, Phil Salt, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans, scheduled to take place soon. RCB captain Rajat Patidar confirmed that Salt is fit but is still under observation following a finger injury he sustained on April 18 during a match against Delhi Capitals.
Salt left for the United Kingdom to undergo treatment after his injury. Although he has been participating in some training drills, Patidar noted that the final decision regarding his inclusion in the playing XI has yet to be made. The captain stated, "Salt is fit. He is under observation. He has been participating in a few drills but we haven’t decided on our playing XI yet. We will look at the pitch and decide."
With Salt’s injury affecting team dynamics, Jacob Bethell initially stepped in for him. However, Bethell was himself ruled out due to a left ring-finger injury. Consequently, Venkatesh Iyer took on the opening role in Bethell’s absence and delivered a commendable performance with a quick-fire 44 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Patidar praised Iyer's versatility and readiness to bat in different positions, highlighting his adaptability as a crucial asset for the team.
Patidar reflected on Iyer's journey, asserting, "I have known Venky since childhood. He has a great attitude and is ready to bat anywhere in the order. He was a main player at Kolkata Knight Riders but when he came here, he didn’t get a lot of chances in the beginning. He accepted that and ensured he was prepared when the chance came to cash in."
The team management will continue to observe Salt’s recovery before ultimately determining the best fit for their squad as they aim for success in the playoffs of IPL 2026.
