Pakistan PM's Image Edit at SCO Summit Draws Criticism

In a recent incident during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, controversy arose when the office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif edited out Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders from an official group photograph. The move appeared aimed at curating a more favourable representation of Sharif, who was placed centrally in the cropped image shared on social media.

The original photograph, taken during the summit held in Bishkek, depicted leaders from ten member countries posing alongside one another. However, the altered version disseminated by Sharif’s office notably omitted key figures, including Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Following backlash and scrutiny over this apparent manipulation, Prime Minister Sharif circulated the complete photograph from his personal account on social media, attempting to mitigate the situation. Criticism of the Pakistan Prime Minister's office for their editing choices was swift, with users across platforms mocking the move as a poor attempt at 'digital diplomacy'.

A social media user commented that it was 'typical of the Pakistani mindset,' while another journalist described it as a 'terrible crop job', highlighting the awkwardness of trying to downplay Modi’s presence at such a significant event. Some netizens even took to creatively editing the photo further, humourously placing objects like a 'begging bowl' in Sharif's hands, a reference to his previous statements about seeking international financial assistance.

In contrast, Modi's social media communications featured the unaltered group depiction, presenting a sense of legitimacy against the backdrop of a politically charged atmosphere. The differing representations continued to stoke tensions between India and Pakistan, which have been historically fraught over multiple issues, including those concerning terrorism and territorial disputes.

At the summit, discussions relating to terrorism were a focal point during Modi’s address, despite the Indian Prime Minister not directly naming Pakistan.
