Pakistan's Fatima Sana Dismisses India's Shafali Verma in Asia Cup

In a recent Women's Asia Cup match held at the Dubai International Stadium, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana's actions during the game against India attracted significant attention. While Sana excelled with the ball, taking three wickets, her send-off of India's Shafali Verma has sparked debates among fans and commentators alike.

The incident occurred on the third ball of the second over when Shafali Verma, India's opening batter, attempted to play a good length delivery from Sana. The ball reared up slightly more than anticipated, leading to a leading edge off Shafali's bat that was caught by Sana. Following the dismissal, the Pakistan captain appeared to gesticulate towards the pavilion, signalling Shafali's return to the dressing room. However, Shafali maintained composure, heading back without any visible reaction.

Shafali managed to score 12 runs from six balls in this match, which included one boundary. Interestingly, earlier in the game, she made history by becoming the youngest player to surpass 3,000 runs in women's Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Achieving this milestone at 22 years and 220 days, she bested the previous record set by Ireland's Gaby Lewis, who reached the total at 24 years and 347 days. Furthermore, Shafali surpassed the mark in just 2,182 balls, exceeding the previous record of 2,321 deliveries set by Australian cricketer Alyssa Healy.

The match began with Fatima Sana winning the toss and electing to bat, a decision that proved unfortunate for the Pakistan side. The team was bowled out for a mere 55 runs in 18.1 overs, with Shree Charani and Prema Rawat taking three wickets each for India, while Deepti Sharma contributed with two.

In response, India launched a dynamic chase. Shafali hit a six off the very first delivery, signalling intent. Although Fatima Sana took crucial wickets including that of Shafali, Smriti Mandhana, and Pratika Rawal, India ultimately succeeded in the chase. Harmanpreet Kaur remained unbeaten on 18 runs, while Deepti Sharma added 12, leading India to victory with seven wickets remaining and 68 balls to spare.

Commentator Vivek Razdan remarked on Sana's send-off, noting the irony in her dismissing Shafali after her own team's poor performance. The incident highlights the competitive spirit and emotions often seen in high-stakes cricket matches, particularly in rivalries like that of India and Pakistan.
