Pakistan Cyber Crime Agency Summons Noreen Niazi Over Allegations

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) of Pakistan has summoned Noreen Niazi, the sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, to appear before its officials on Monday. This summons is based on allegations that she disseminated false, offensive, and inflammatory content targeting state institutions.

According to a notice issued on July 18, the NCCIA claims Niazi has been involved in spreading misinformation aimed at defaming these institutions and promoting fake narratives. The agency instructed her to present herself at its G-13/3 office in Islamabad by July 20 for a related inquiry. The notice cautioned that failure to comply would imply she had no defence to offer, a non-compliance that carries penalties under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The notice does not specify the exact content that prompted this action. However, it has come to light following a widely circulated clip of Niazi in which she made claims regarding a military conflict between Pakistan and India that occurred last year. During her interview, she suggested that the conflict was orchestrated to enhance the reputation of Pakistan's military, asserting that it was executed in partnership with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Niazi further alleged that the intention behind this “drama” was for Pakistan to recognise Israel, linking this to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s commendation of Pakistan’s leadership. In response to her remarks, several Pakistani government officials have voiced strong opposition. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned her statements during a gathering in Lahore, accusing her of attempting to support her brother’s political ambitions.

Tarar argued that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership, to which Imran Khan belongs, has shown a disregard for national welfare, contrasting it with the perceived service of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He stressed the sacrifices made by soldiers to protect the country and demanded that Niazi apologise.

Tallal Chaudhry, the Minister of State for Interior, similarly condemned Niazi's statements, asserting that they were damaging to Pakistan's stability. He made a controversial claim linking the PTI's financial support to Israel to Imran Khan’s family background.

Chaudhry indicated that Niazi's previous remarks reflected a pattern of behaviour tantamount to an anti-state agenda, suggesting a potential legal action against her. He stated that those undermining Pakistan’s integrity would not be spared from consequences.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also denounced Niazi's comments, describing the Pakistan Armed Forces as a source of national pride. He claimed that Imran’s family has demonstrated hostility towards Pakistan through their statements, asserting that the entire nation condemns such remarks.

While the NCCIA's inquiry is ongoing, it highlights the sensitive nature of narratives surrounding Pakistan's military and its relationship with neighbouring India, especially given the historical context of conflict between the two nations. This case underscores the broader implications of political discourse within Pakistan and the scrutiny faced by figures associated with dissenting opinions against state narratives.
