Pakistan Air Force Trainer Aircraft Crash in Mianwali Region
A training aircraft belonging to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has crashed in the Kamarmashani area of Mianwali. Initial reports indicate that the incident involved a Hongdu JL-8 jet, which was on a training mission. Footage circulating online shows the moment of the crash, alongside video evidence of parachutes deployed shortly before the aircraft went down. Fortunately, both pilots are reported to have ejected successfully prior to the crash landing. The precise cause of the incident remains unverified, and the PAF has not yet issued an official statement regarding the condition of the pilots or any potential casualties on the ground. This latest crash adds to a concerning trend observed over the past two decades in which the PAF has reported numerous incidents involving training aircraft and older models. Mianwali has historically experienced several such accidents; for instance, a similar crash occurred in January 2020 when an FT-7 training aircraft met with disaster during a training exercise, resulting in the deaths of both pilots on board. In that case, it was revealed that 14 FT-7 and its variants had crashed within an 18-year span. Another incident in August 2017 involved the crash of an F-7 fighter jet near Mianwali due to mechanical failure, which claimed the life of Wing Commander Mohammad Shahzad, who was unable to eject. A troubling proliferation of incidents has included around ten F-7PG and FT-7 aircraft that crashed within a decade. Other high-profile accidents include a 2020 F-16 crash during a rehearsal in Islamabad, as well as several more recent crashes of trainer aircraft. Experts suggest that such incidents are often linked to the intensive use of aging fleets and the associated technical problems. The PAF typically conducts a thorough formal inquiry following each crash to determine the root causes, though results from such investigations may take time to emerge.
