Pakistan and Afghanistan: Ongoing Challenges in Polio Eradication
The struggle to eliminate polio continues in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the last two holdouts globally, despite vaccination efforts and health campaigns.

World Polio Day, observed annually on October 24, highlights the ongoing battle against polio, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which remain the only countries where the disease has not been eradicated. Recent reports indicate that both nations are facing significant challenges in their efforts to eliminate polio, even as vaccination campaigns persist.

Pakistan has underscored its commitment to vaccination, yet various socio-political factors continue to hinder these efforts. Misinformation and distrust around the vaccination process have led to resistance among some communities, complicating the efforts of health workers. Additionally, security concerns have limited access for vaccination teams in certain regions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a worrying trend regarding polio cases in Afghanistan, where recent data outlined that 42 polio cases were documented this year. Health officials stress the necessity for community cooperation in vaccinating children to prevent further outbreaks. In a statement issued by Afghanistan’s health authorities, parents were urged to ensure their children receive the vaccine, with emphasis on the right of every child to grow up disease-free.

Health workers in Afghanistan, like Rashed Anwari, a dedicated vaccinator, continue to face the hurdles of community outreach. With over 14 years of experience, Rashed has gained the trust of his community, enabling him to address concerns regarding vaccinations. His role extends beyond administering vaccines; he strives to educate families on the importance of immunization and to counteract fears or misconceptions surrounding the vaccine.

Despite their commitment, vaccinators encounter numerous barriers, including geographic isolation and weather conditions. Health workers are consistently required to adapt their strategies to reach unvaccinated children, ensuring they do not miss essential immunisation opportunities.

Prominent voices within both countries continue to advocate for improved parental engagement and community involvement in vaccination campaigns. This community mobilisation is considered essential for long-term eradication. Health authorities and organisations such as UNICEF stress that collaboration between health workers, families, and community leaders is vital to overcome the challenges posed by polio.

World Polio Day provides an occasion for renewed focus on these efforts, encouraging global awareness and support in combating the disease. As countries work towards eradicating polio and protecting future generations, the role of community trust and participation remains fundamental.
