Bihar Women Commission Responds to Pappu Yadav’s Controversial Remarks

The Bihar State Women Commission has taken significant action against Independent Member of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan, known as Pappu Yadav, following controversial remarks he made about women in politics. Speaking during a parliamentary session, Yadav stated that a vast majority of women, approximately 90%, are unable to initiate their political careers without being involved with a male leader. His comments have ignited a debate about the culture of exploitation that women face in the political sphere.

On Tuesday, 21 April 2026, the commission issued a notice to Pappu Yadav, requesting an explanation for his statements and questioning whether a recommendation should be sent to the Lok Sabha Speaker to invalidate his parliamentary membership. The commission characterised his remarks as a violation of women's dignity, highlighting the necessity for accountability regarding statements that perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

During his speech, Pappu Yadav voiced strong critiques regarding the treatment of women not just in India, but globally, claiming that exploitation had become a pervasive issue across various spheres, including education and the workplace. He pointed out that this issue was ‘ingrained’ in political culture, with leaders behaving predaciously towards women.

Yadav expressed concern that factors such as political power often lead to a culture where women are devalued and subject to objectionable behaviour. "Go to school, and your daughter faces exploitation; go to college, and there's exploitation in the name of ragging; go to the office, exploitation is there as well..." he remarked, underscoring the systemic nature of the problem.

His statements also included allegations about inappropriate behaviours exhibited by politicians, asserting that many leaders are engaged in watching pornography rather than attending to their responsibilities.

Yadav's comments have drawn intense backlash, leading to the Women's Commission's swift response as they aim to uphold the dignity of women in politics.
