Owaisi Urges Muslim Youth to Dismiss Political Dynasties
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi's remarks have sparked debate about political leadership among Muslim youth, facing backlash from opposition parties.

Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), called on Muslim youth to assume leadership roles rather than following established political families like the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and the Yadavs. Addressing an election event in Rampur, he stated, "We will no longer make any Nehru, Gandhi, or any Yadav our leader. Young men and women standing in our ranks will become leaders." Owaisi’s comments have incited criticism from various opposition figures, who accuse him of fostering a polarising perspective in a nation that traditionally values pluralism.

Abbas Haider, spokesperson for the Samajwadi Party (SP), responded by asserting that voters in Uttar Pradesh understand their political landscape and can make informed choices. He recounted the AIMIM's performance in the last Assembly elections held in 2022, suggesting that Owaisi's rhetoric is not new and is part of a broader divisive agenda.

"The people of Uttar Pradesh are looking towards leadership that brings society together, rather than forces that divide people along communal or other lines," Haider remarked. The SP has focused on issues affecting backward classes, Dalits, and minority groups under the leadership of their national president, Akhilesh Yadav.

Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput echoed Haider's sentiments, indicating that his party struggles to engage politically with figures who do not honour the legacy of leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. He accused Owaisi of derogating Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's contributions, suggesting that such leaders cannot be deemed patriotic. Rajput also alleged that Owaisi's speeches featured confrontational language while expressing a desire to ally with the INDIA coalition.

In Patna, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) articulated that Owaisi is entitled to his political stance but should not impede other parties from discussing representation. Jha emphasised the intrinsic diversity in India's political and intellectual traditions, citing the importance of accommodating various leaders in the national dialogue.

"India was never of one colour. There was never a one-dimensional way of thinking. That is the pluralistic thinking of India," Jha stated. In Delhi, Congress figure Udit Raj accused Owaisi of promoting a divisive narrative akin to that of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting that both he and BJP are contributing to communal division.

Owaisi reaffirmed his party’s commitment to empowering young Muslims to enter politics as a means of advocating for justice and representation of marginalised groups. He posed a challenge to political parties to accept leaders from the Muslim community, questioning their reluctance to promote individuals such as Shaukat Ali and Mehtab Jahan.

In the lead-up to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, expected in early 2027, tensions are rising. The current BJP-led government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been in power since 2017, with the SP, in alliance with the Congress, viewed as the main contender. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), directed by former Chief Minister Mayawati, continues to play a significant role despite not holding any seats in the existing Assembly.

Owaisi has expressed a repeated willingness to collaborate with opposition parties, including the SP, against the BJP in future elections. However, Akhilesh Yadav has indicated a plan to maintain the current alliance with Congress. The AIMIM has historically struggled to gain traction in Uttar Pradesh with a limited footprint. In the last Assembly elections in 2022, AIMIM garnered only around 0.4% of the total votes, and many of its candidates had failed to meet the necessary voting thresholds to retain their deposits in 2017.
