Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti Criticise Proposed Sermon Guidelines
Jammu and Kashmir’s political leaders have voiced strong objections to a proposal aiming to standardise Friday sermons across the region's mosques. Former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have publicly called for the protection of the independence of local religious practices. The initiative is reportedly backed by the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board, which has suggested uniform sermons that would be pre-determined by an appointed committee.
Omar Abdullah, the president of the National Conference, articulated his opposition on social media, asserting that local imams should retain the autonomy to address their congregations based on varying contexts. He stated, “This is not how religious practices should function.”
Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, echoed Abdullah's sentiments, asserting that such a move undermines the cultural and religious fabric of the region. She emphasised the need for religious leaders to convey messages relevant to their specific communities.
Additionally, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent religious leader, has joined the dissent against this proposal, labelling it unnecessary interference. The proposal has stirred significant debate among residents, with many expressing concern over potential restrictions on religious expression.
The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has defended its position, claiming that the move aims to maintain harmony and provide a coordinated approach to sermons amidst increasing religious polarisation. The Board's chairman has stated that consultations with local imams and muftis led to the suggestion, indicating that it seeks to encourage a collective religious discourse.
Despite this justification, the political backlash continues, highlighting a broader struggle over religious autonomy and regional identity in Jammu and Kashmir, a region with a complex socio-political landscape.
As the debate unfolds, observers are keen to see how the proposal will evolve amidst mounting public opposition and the political response it has elicited.
