The Odyssey Premiere: Critics Praise Christopher Nolan's Masterpiece
The world premiere of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, took place in London, resulting in early reactions that heavily praise the work. Critics have hailed it as one of Nolan's finest achievements, calling it a masterpiece that showcases some of the best performances from its cast. Following the premiere, film critics from both the United States and the United Kingdom took to social media to express their initial impressions of the film.
Many of the reviewers commended the grand scale of the production, as well as Nolan's unique incorporation of supernatural and horror elements drawn from Homer’s original text. Steven Weintraub of Collider described The Odyssey on X, stating, “Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is INCREDIBLE. I'm really blown away by this film. Everything from the flawless performances to the way Nolan embraces the supernatural is just perfect.”
Perri Nemiroff, a senior film critic, echoed this sentiment, labelling it “a filmmaking feast” and praising its gripping rendition of Homer’s epic. She remarked, “It’s sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart.”
Critics unanimously agreed that Nolan successfully captured the epic nature of the original work. Film journalist Rachel Leishman noted, “THE ODYSSEY is as epic as its source material with that level of Christopher Nolan spark that makes it something special. It's a story of love and loss and takes you on quite the journey in only the way Nolan knows how. Breathtaking, bold, and perfection.”
The cast of The Odyssey includes renowned actors such as Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya. They received extensive praise from the critics, with Jazz Tangcay from Variety asserting that the performances from the ensemble, particularly from Damon and Pattinson, are among the best of their careers. “The performances from Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong'o are genuinely grand. And for some, truly, the best performances of their career,” Tangcay noted.
Simon Thompson, another film journalist, highlighted Damon’s role as Odysseus, describing it as a “career-best powerhouse performance.” He also praised Robert Pattinson's portrayal of Antinous and referred to John Leguizamo’s Eumaeus as sublime. Erik Davis from Fandango offered special commendation for Pattinson, stating that the actor's performance was captivating and that he truly embraced the villainous aspects of his character. He remarked, “The cast is stacked, and somehow everyone still gets a chance to shine... But Robert Pattinson absolutely stole the show for me.”
The Odyssey is set for a worldwide release in theatres on July 17, 2023. The anticipation surrounding the film continues to build as critics and audiences alike await its official debut, eager to witness what is being described as a landmark in Nolan's directorial career.
