Nothing Announces New Smartphone Launch Amid CMF Phone Cancellation
Nothing Technology, a London-based smartphone manufacturer, is gearing up to unveil a new mobile device, although it will not be the anticipated CMF Phone 3 Pro. This decision was announced by Akis Evangelidis, co-founder of Nothing, on the social media platform X, indicating that rising memory prices have forced the company to reconsider its launch plans.
The CMF Phone 2 Pro, which debuted last year, created a significant impact in the market with features such as a telephoto sensor and a unique design, all priced below ₹20,000 (approximately £200). Nevertheless, Evangelidis stated that the company had to abandon plans for a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro due to the current high cost of memory, which has escalated to a point where it exceeds the prices of other critical components like system-on-chip units and displays.
He remarked, “We were working on a successor but with memory prices where they are right now, we can't build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.” Given this, he confirmed, “As a result, we've decided not to launch a new CMF phone this year.”
Despite this setback, Nothing has confirmed there will still be new smartphone releases this year. The company has already launched two models in 2023, namely the Phone 4a and Phone 4a Pro. Recently, Nothing's marketing team released a teaser suggesting a new product in the pipeline, possibly referring to a new device under the Nothing brand. Although nothing concrete has been announced about a new model, speculation abounds that it may involve the upcoming Nothing Phone 4b.
This speculation was further fuelled by promotional materials featuring two Pokémon characters, Jumpluff and Blastoise, which typically serve as codenames for upcoming devices. While the precise nature of these new products remains undisclosed, industry insiders suggest that Blastoise might be linked to a new smartphone, while Jumpluff could refer to a new audio device, possibly the Ear 3a.
Reports suggest that the now-cancelled CMF Phone 3 Pro was intended to incorporate a metal frame and a redesigned camera module, along with anticipated specifications that included a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset and a large 5,500mAh battery. As per industry tipster Yogesh Brar, these features might still be available under the broader Nothing brand, with a potential launch expected in India next month.
With smartphone manufacturers increasingly affected by price fluctuations in component costs, the decisions made by companies like Nothing may reflect broader market trends. As consumers await further developments, the tech community will be closely monitoring Nothing's future announcements regarding its product lineup.
