North Korea Launches Ballistic Missiles Amid Rising Tensions
North Korea has fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea, escalating tensions with South Korea and violating UN resolutions.

North Korea has conducted another missile launch, firing multiple ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast, according to the South Korean military. The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported that one missile travelled over 900 kilometres from the vicinity of Pyongyang on Monday. The exact number of missiles released has not been disclosed.

Japan's coastguard confirmed the detection of two unidentified projectiles, assumed to be ballistic missiles, that fell shortly after launch.

In response to the missile activity, South Korea's presidential office stated that such provocations breach United Nations Security Council resolutions and called for an immediate halt to the launches. The latest incident follows heightened military capabilities from both North and South Korea, including South Korea's recent hypersonic missile test.

Jang Do-young, a spokesperson for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, indicated that the missile launch from North Korea seems to demonstrate military strength, particularly in light of South Korea's advancement in hypersonic technology. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung oversaw the country's inaugural test of a hypersonic missile, which aims to improve its strike capabilities against critical targets in the region.

On October 3, North Korea engaged in its own hypersonic missile test, designed to evade regional missile defence systems. The growing series of missile tests has escalated tensions, particularly following an incident where a landmine blast in the Demilitarized Zone injured three South Korean soldiers. An investigation concluded that the mines had been planted by North Korean forces, which Pyongyang denied.

Seoul previously expressed a desire to engage in diplomatic talks with North Korea, with President Lee pledging to reopen dialogue following his inauguration in 2025. However, relations remain strained as North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, persists in promoting the country’s nuclear weapons programme, disregarding American and South Korean overtures for renewed negotiations. In recent years, diplomacy stagnated after summits between Kim and former US President Donald Trump ended without a deal.

North Korea’s government continues to assert that the United States must abandon its so-called ‘hostile’ stance and remove demands for denuclearisation before meaningful discussions can take place.

As the situation evolves, analysts caution that these military demonstrations are likely to exacerbate the existing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, making diplomatic resolutions more challenging.
