North Korea's Kim Yo Jong: Nuclear Programme Inflexible Amid Tensions
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stated that the country’s nuclear weapons programme is "the line of no retreat." This declaration came via state media on June 7, 2026, right before a scheduled visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
While North Korea has maintained its right to develop nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, these activities are prohibited under United Nations Security Council sanctions. In 2023, North Korea solidified its nuclear status in its constitution.
Kim Yo Jong's remarks appear to be a direct response to geopolitical tensions, especially concerning U.S. arms sales to South Korea. Citing these sales as indicative of a "ceaseless arms buildup of the hostile countries," she justified North Korea’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military arsenal.
As a prominent figure in the regime's foreign policy, Kim Yo Jong's statement was issued on the eve of Xi Jinping’s visit, marking his first trip to Pyongyang in seven years. This visit comes on the heels of Xi's recent engagements with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
North Korea has continuously identified itself as an "irreversible" nuclear state following the breakdown of denuclearisation talks with the U.S. in 2019. The regime has been empowered by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, receiving significant support from Russia.
In a separate report, Kim Jong Un inspected a munitions factory, urging an increase in missile production capacity. His comments emphasised the need for a sufficient missile supply, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Kim Yo Jong also contested the U.S. government’s interpretation of a recent summit between Trump and Xi, asserting that claims of reaffirmed denuclearisation intentions were false. “Some officials in the United States have failed to wake from their escapist and anachronistic dreams,” she noted.
In the context of rising sensitivities to U.S.-China cooperation on North Korean denuclearisation, analysts believe that Kim Yo Jong’s statement serves as a strong rebuttal to what she termed "false information." Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, suggested that Pyongyang might have confirmed with Beijing that no discussions regarding denuclearisation had taken place prior to the summit.
Overall, the statements by Kim Yo Jong reinforce the North Korean leadership's unyielding position on its nuclear capabilities as it navigates an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
