Nirmala Sitharaman to Attend AIIB Meeting in Qatar for Infrastructure Talks

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Finance Minister of India, will lead a delegation to Qatar from September 27 to 29 to attend the 11th Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Doha. The minister's visit includes crucial discussions with finance ministers from several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Switzerland, Algeria, and Nepal.

During her time in Qatar, Sitharaman will represent India as the country's Governor at the AIIB. As the second-largest shareholder in the bank after China, India plays a significant role in AIIB initiatives. The meeting aims to address various key issues under the theme "Tomorrow’s Infrastructure: Impact and Innovation." This marks the bank's transition into its second decade and reaffirms its commitment to sustainable infrastructure development.

Sitharaman's agenda includes a bilateral discussion with Zou Jiayi, President of AIIB. The finance ministry announced that she is also expected to engage with Qatari business leaders and government officials during her visit.

The AIIB focuses on promoting investment in infrastructure across Asia to enhance sustainable economic development and connectivity. Founded in 2016, the bank has since approved 388 projects, totaling investments of approximately $76.91 billion. Its headquarters is located in Beijing, China, and it now has 111 members worldwide.

The upcoming annual meeting is anticipated to cover crucial topics such as climate finance and digital public infrastructure, alongside fostering private capital investment in infrastructure projects. AIIB's strategic direction will also be a focal point of discussion, ensuring that it continues to adapt to global development challenges.

Zou Jiayi stated that the annual meeting is an opportunity to deepen international partnerships and to strengthen cooperation on infrastructural development. As the AIIB continues to evolve, its role as a multilateral development bank will become increasingly vital in addressing the complexities faced by member countries in infrastructure development.
