Netanyahu Announces Upcoming Meeting with Trump on Gaza Plan
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu states plans to meet with President Trump to discuss the next phase of the Gaza peace plan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed plans for a meeting with United States President Donald Trump later this month, during which they will discuss the imminent second phase of the Gaza plan. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Jerusalem.

Netanyahu indicated that the upcoming discussions aim to explore potential paths towards peace and the end of Hamas's governance in the Gaza Strip. He expressed optimism about the progress made so far in negotiations concerning the next steps of the U.S. plan, which has been under deliberation since the outbreak of conflict in October 2023.

The proposed plan includes key components such as the release of Israeli hostages and the establishment of a temporary technocratic Palestinian government in Gaza. This government would be overseen by an international board of peace, supported by an international security force, with the goal of stabilising the region.

“I will be having very important conversations at the end of the month on how to ensure the second phase will be achieved,” Netanyahu stated, underscoring the significance of the upcoming discussions.

As the first phase of the plan draws to a close, the situation in Gaza remains tense. Despite a ceasefire that took effect on October 10, violence continues in varying degrees. Since the truce began, Hamas has returned all living Israeli hostages and some deceased individuals in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees. However, one hostage's remains are yet to be returned.

The ceasefire agreement has been instrumental in reducing hostilities in the region, though it has not entirely stopped violence. Reports indicate that since the ceasefire, Hamas has faced pressure to fulfill its obligations, including the return of all remains from the conflict.

Netanyahu has acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, particularly regarding the demilitarisation of Hamas and the governance of Gaza. He noted that the first stage of the ceasefire was achieved against widespread scepticism and expressed his belief that overcoming the hurdles of the second phase is equally daunting.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for Israel’s right to security, citing historical obligations stemming from the Holocaust. He added that Germany continues to advocate for a two-state solution, although he emphasised that recognition of a Palestinian state should occur only after a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The United States has been closely involved in mediating discussions surrounding the Gaza peace process, with President Trump expected to announce developments regarding the second phase before Christmas. The U.S. administration is eager to prevent a return to widespread violence and is actively engaging with regional leaders and stakeholders.

As negotiations progress, the situation remains fluid, with various factions within Gaza expressing differing views on disarmament and governance. The coming weeks will be critical in determining the direction of the peace process and the future of the region.
