Nationwide Protests Erupt in Spain Over Housing Crisis
Tens of thousands rally in Spain demanding urgent housing reforms after parliament rejects key measures to tackle the escalating crisis.

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Spain, calling for action to address the escalating housing crisis. Demonstrations occurred in the capital, Madrid, and approximately 50 other cities on Saturday, following the rejection of an emergency relief package aimed at assisting tenants.

The protests were sparked by the Spanish parliament's decision to reject two decrees proposed by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's left-wing coalition, which sought to mitigate the nation's housing crisis. Protesters are advocating for a general strike and significant reforms to tackle the increasingly unaffordable housing market.

One demonstrator, Nando de Anguulo, spoke to Reuters, expressing frustration: "It’s a shame... It only proves that it is us, the people, who have to adapt to the political parties, and not the politicians to what the people want, and this can’t go on like that."

Valeria Racu, a spokesperson for the Tenants’ Union, noted that the rallies have showcased a "new energy that we haven’t seen in a long time". She highlighted that the demonstrations are a reaction to the eviction of an 87-year-old woman, Maricarmen Abascal, from her Madrid home last month, which ignited widespread public outcry.

The situation escalated in Valencia, where police utilised rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse some protestors. The unrest coincided with a real estate summit at a cultural venue where tensions flared, resulting in several injuries among police and multiple arrests.

Protests in other cities largely remained peaceful. Demonstrators carried signs with slogans including "Houses to live in, a planet to inhabit" and "the right to a roof". Many participants took to the streets demanding lower rents and a halt to evictions. Madrid's Tenants' Union reported that the number of participants in the capital varied significantly, with estimates ranging from 70,000 to 500,000.

The rejected measures included a suspension of evictions for vulnerable tenants until 2030 and a two-year extension for rental leases coming to an end prior to 2028. Additionally, there were proposals for tax hikes on tourist accommodation and regulations to limit property acquisitions by investment firms, commonly referred to as "vulture funds".

The failure to pass the proposals is a setback for Sanchez’s minority government, which relies on the support of smaller nationalist parties to function. The right-wing Catalan separatist party Junts opposed the legislation, arguing it would exacerbate the housing situation.

Political analysts suggest this parliamentary defeat may prompt Sanchez to consider calling an early general election, a move that has not yet been confirmed. Following the parliament's vote, leaders of opposition parties—such as the Popular Party and the far-right Vox—have publicly urged Sanchez to step down.

Recent reports indicate that Spain is facing a housing shortage, with estimates from the Bank of Spain suggesting a deficit of around 700,000 homes. Rental prices have surged by 8.5% nationwide, whilst major urban areas like Madrid and Barcelona have seen housing costs increase significantly over the past year.

The mounting public pressure indicates a growing demand for substantive policy changes to alleviate the pressing housing crisis in Spain, reflecting a discontent that extends beyond mere legislative failures.
