Nand Kishore Goenka, Leader in Social Welfare, Dies at 96
Nand Kishore Goenka, the patriarch of the Goenka family and father of prominent businessman Subhash Chandra, has died at the age of 96 in Mumbai. His passing occurred on Monday morning and has prompted both sadness and celebration within his family. In a poignant reflection, Subhash Chandra shared on social media that the family preferred to honour his father's legacy with recognition rather than sorrow.
Nand Kishore Goenka's life epitomised a commitment to service, faith, and community enhancement. He was a devoted swayamsevak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist organisation in India known for advocating for cultural and social causes. His role in the RSS shaped not just his personal convictions but also encouraged philanthropy within the Goenka family.
Two primary causes characterised Goenka's legacy: samaj seva, or community service, and gau seva, the protection of cows. He tirelessly promoted rural development and supported initiatives that delivered education and medical services to underprivileged communities. His work in gau seva included establishing and maintaining gaushalas, which are shelters for cows, reflecting his belief in protecting both nature and societal welfare.
His mortal remains were displayed at Vasant Sagar on Marine Drive, attracting a gathering of family, friends, and notable individuals from the business and media sectors who came to pay their respects. In line with traditional practices, the family will return his remains to Haryana for cremation and last rites, set to take place at Goenka Udyan in Agroha on Wednesday morning.
Goenka leaves behind a legacy enriched with community-oriented initiatives and family values that emphasise the harmony between business success and social responsibility. His contributions and vision will continue to influence his descendants and the societal frameworks he supported.
