Mohammad Kaif Advocates Patience on Mustafizur Rahman IPL Debate
Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif calls for patience regarding Mustafizur Rahman's involvement with the IPL amidst rising tensions in Bangladesh.

Sharjah: Mohammad Kaif, the former Indian cricketer, has advised stakeholders to exercise patience regarding the ongoing controversy involving Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman and his association with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Kaif, who is currently serving as a commentator for the ILT20 league in the UAE, expressed his views on the sidelines of the competition.

In his remarks, Kaif stated, "I am not so knowledgeable; I am sitting here in Dubai for 2-3 weeks. What will be the decision? Everything comes under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the decision is in their hands." He highlighted the sensitivity of the issue and refrained from making any definitive statements, urging everyone to adopt a cautious approach.

"I think we should not just jump the gun. We should just wait and watch; whatever the decision will be, BCCI are sitting there, they run big leagues, they know what to do and how to do it," he added.

The controversy surrounding Mustafizur Rahman intensified following remarks from spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur, who publicly condemned Bollywood actor and KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for signing the Bangladeshi cricketer during the IPL auction. Thakur characterised Khan as a "traitor," citing the ongoing persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh.

Thakur stated, "The way Hindus are being persecuted in Bangladesh, women and girls are being raped, their homes are being burned, and anti-India slogans are being chanted there. Despite all this, traitors like Shah Rukh Khan... invest it in players from a country that is working against India."

He clarified that his comments were not motivated by personal feelings, saying, "I have never met Shah Rukh Khan. I don't know him. I've only seen his posters. I don't watch films. I don't do things that corrupt the character of the world."

Thakur’s statements have sparked political responses from various parties in India, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the Shiv Sena (UBT). The heightened tensions coincided with recent violent incidents in Bangladesh targeting the Hindu community. One such incident involved the tragic death of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, who was killed by a mob over alleged blasphemy, highlighting the precarious situation for minorities in the region.

Another incident reported involved the lynching of a Hindu youth in Rajbari's Pangsha sub-district, further underscoring the challenges faced by the Hindu population in Bangladesh amidst rising sectarian tensions.
