Modi and Shah Criticise TMC on Women's Safety Ahead of Bengal Polls

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah intensified their critiques of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) during recent election rallies in West Bengal, focusing primarily on issues related to women's safety. Modi promised to dismantle what he termed the 'jungle raj' of the TMC, vowing that 'mothers and sisters will not feel scared to come out of their homes even at 2 am' under a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. The remarks were made at a rally in Panihati, where Ratna Debnath, the mother of a rape victim from RG Kar Medical College, is contesting as a BJP candidate. Modi shared the tragic story of Debnath's daughter, who he claimed was lost to the TMC's misrule. He emphasised that the safety of women has not been a priority for the TMC, stating, 'When the daughters of Bengal seek justice, TMC tells them not to step out of their homes to avoid rape.' This rhetoric aims to connect with voters ahead of the second phase of polling in 142 constituencies of South Bengal.

Amit Shah echoed similar sentiments at a rally in Uttarpara, asserting that a BJP-led government would transform safety perceptions for women. He stressed that under their leadership, there would be an environment where women could freely move about without fear. He also addressed the violence that marred previous elections, highlighting that the recent polls saw fewer injuries compared to past elections, thus indicating a more peaceful electoral process.

In response, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee countered these allegations, arguing that 'those sitting in Delhi' aimed to impose their agenda on Bengal's populace. She asserted that the TMC is committed to protecting the rights of women and will face any attempts to undermine the state with a democratic response. Banerjee highlighted the beautification of the local riverfront areas as an example of the TMC's contributions to the community, contrasting it with the situation of the Yamuna River in Delhi.

The political confrontation is occurring in a state where women voters have historically played an influential role in election outcomes. Modi's sharp attacks seem aimed at swaying female voters, who have formed a crucial base for Banerjee's party in past elections. With the BJP's focus on women's safety, the stakes are high as both parties prepare for the upcoming electoral battles.

A major point of contention remains the case of the RG Kar victim, which sparked nationwide outrage and protests against the TMC regime. Modi's highlighting of this case serves to amplify the BJP's narrative that the TMC has failed to deliver justice for women in West Bengal. He assured the electorate that a BJP government would address past security failures and hold accountable those responsible for crimes against women, stating that 'after the BJP government is formed on May 4, files will be opened regarding all atrocities against women. This is Modi's guarantee.'
