Modi Receives Order of Oman and Signs FTA During Gulf Visit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the prestigious Order of Oman, the highest civilian honour from the Sultanate, during his recent two-day visit to Oman. The visit concluded with the signing of a significant free trade agreement that aims to enhance bilateral relations between India and Oman.
This trip marks the final stop of PM Modi's three-nation tour, which included visits to Jordan and Ethiopia. Upon his departure, he was seen off at Muscat International Airport by Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs.
Awarding of the Order of Oman
The Order of Oman was conferred upon PM Modi by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in recognition of his efforts to bolster India-Oman relations. This accolade adds to PM Modi’s extensive list of international awards, which now includes over 29 civilian honours from foreign governments, emphasizing his global diplomatic engagement. Notably, past recipients of this honour include prominent figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela.
During his earlier visit to Ethiopia, PM Modi received the Great Honour Nishan, the country’s highest civilian award, further demonstrating his commitment to fostering international partnerships.
Significance of the Free Trade Agreement
A key achievement of PM Modi’s visit to Oman was the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), marking a milestone in trade relations between the two nations. This agreement notably includes provisions for India’s traditional medicine systems, which is a first in any trade agreement involving India. It opens avenues for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) products and services in the Gulf region.
The CEPA addresses various aspects of trade, including health-related services and traditional medicine, with commitments from Oman to facilitate these sectors. This move is expected to enhance market access for Indian wellness industries in Oman and beyond.
According to reports, India’s exports in the AYUSH sector have seen substantial growth, increasing from $1.09 billion in 2014 to $1.54 billion in 2020. The CEPA also includes a dedicated annex on cooperation in licensing, medical value travel, and joint research efforts.
Broader Cooperation and Future Initiatives
In addition to the CEPA, India and Oman have committed to a Joint Vision Document and signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that cover fields such as maritime heritage, scientific research, and skills development. A recent business dialogue highlighted investment opportunities aligned with Oman Vision 2040, aimed at diversifying the economy.
Addressing the Indian diaspora at the ‘Maitri Parv’ event in Muscat, PM Modi referred to the gathering as a representation of a “mini-India” and underscored the enduring people-to-people connections between the two nations. He articulated that modern India is capable of making swift decisions and achieving ambitious goals, even in challenging global circumstances.
PM Modi also spoke on various aspects of India's economic growth, noting advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, and digital innovation. He emphasised that India is positioning itself not only as a market but as a global model for development.
Cultural and Historical Ties
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties shared between India and Oman, acknowledging the diaspora as the “biggest custodian” of these connections. He stressed that the partnership is evolving to meet future challenges through collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital learning, and space exploration, including the development of the India-Oman Space Portal in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation.
During his visit, PM Modi also engaged in discussions with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik regarding bilateral and regional issues of mutual concern. The Omani leadership hosted a formal dinner in honour of the Prime Minister and his delegation, reflecting the warmth and depth of the ties between the two countries.
