Modi Inaugurates Swaminarayan Temple in Paris, Celebrating Ties

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swaminarayan temple in Paris on Sunday, emphasising the strengthening relations between India and France. Speaking virtually at the event, he characterised the partnership as a Special Global Strategic Partnership founded on deep-rooted cultural and political ties. He noted that the temple will stand as a lasting symbol of cooperation between the two nations.

Modi pointed out that recent years have seen a significant elevation in India-France relations, especially in technology, artificial intelligence, defence, space exploration, and climate initiatives. "We are also celebrating 2026 as the India-France Year of Innovation," he stated, reaffirming the unique nature of this strategic alliance.

He mentioned the joint ventures blossoming between the nations, recalling the historical significance of Indian soldiers who fought in World War I alongside the French, a connection that remains in the hearts of many today. Modi also acknowledged the efforts of French scholars in promoting Sanskrit and highlighted the writings of Romain Rolland, which helped bridge cultural gaps.

The Prime Minister referenced the spiritual journey of ‘The Mother’ from Paris to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry, which has inspired many seekers from both nations. He also noted that yoga serves as a conduit for cultural exchange and highlighted its popularity in France, especially as represented during International Yoga Day at the Eiffel Tower.

The inauguration of the Swaminarayan temple is seen as significant, as it encapsulates the blending of Indian heritage and French craftsmanship. Many stones were sourced from India, incorporating traditional craftsmanship with contemporary engineering techniques. Modi expressed confidence that the temple's values will resonate across Europe, enriching cultural exchanges.

He mentioned that he would like to visit the temple in the future and reiterated the role of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in fostering service alongside devotion. He conveyed that the temple would become a centre for community services, expanding its role beyond just spirituality.

Modi concluded that the temple is not only a testament to shared heritage but will also enrich France's cultural diversity and energise the ongoing cultural relations between India and France. He stated, "A magnificent temple stands ready today in France, which will contribute to enhancing cultural relations between our nations."
