Mitsubishi Pajero Returns with New Features and Off-Road Capability

Mitsubishi has unveiled the latest iteration of the Pajero, marking its return after being discontinued globally in 2021. The new model, which is a fifth-generation SUV, features a rugged design built on a Triton-based ladder-frame chassis with four-wheel drive. It is powered by a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque.

This revamped Pajero is designed to cater to both on-road and off-road enthusiasts. The four-wheel-drive system, upgraded eight-speed automatic gearbox, and suspension setup show a clear return to the brand's traditional off-road heritage. The vehicle also comes equipped with a solid rear axle, four-wheel coil springs, and disc brakes, enhancing its capability in demanding terrains.

The exterior design of the Pajero maintains a boxy silhouette reminiscent of earlier models. It features a long wheelbase with short overhangs, an upright windscreen, and a flat roof that contribute to its sturdy appearance. The front end showcases an upright grille, stacked LED daytime running lights, circular auxiliary lamps, and a squared-off bumper, while the rear is accentuated by prominent 'PAJERO' lettering and vertical tail-lights.

Inside, the SUV is built to accommodate three rows of seats. Higher variants may offer modern amenities such as two large 14.3-inch screens, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and three-zone automatic climate control. The cabin's dashboard utilises a stylish tan and black trim, and retains physical controls for ease of use alongside the touchscreen interface. Off-road features include a display that shows key performance metrics like altitude and roll angle, as well as a rotary terrain selector for adjusting driving modes.

The Pajero name has been a key part of Mitsubishi's SUV lineup since 1981, gaining recognition for its off-road capabilities and competition in international rally events. The new model seeks to reintroduce these qualities with its body-on-frame design, diverging from the unibody construction seen in some of its recent predecessors.

Expected to be available in GLX, GLS, Exceed, and GSR variants, the new Mitsubishi Pajero will compete primarily with the Ford Everest and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. This model aims to fill a gap in Mitsubishi's offerings by expanding its larger off-road vehicle range above the Outlander. However, there are currently no plans to launch the Pajero in the Indian market, despite the existing partnership between Mitsubishi and Nissan under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
