Mehli Mistry Requests Investigation into Tata Trusts Affiliate
Mehli Mistry, a former trustee of Tata Trusts, has submitted an affidavit to the Maharashtra charity commissioner asking for a probe into alleged irregularities at the Bai Hirabai Jamsetji Tata Navsari Charitable Institution. Mistry's request arises from his concerns regarding the appointments of two vice chairmen, Vijay Singh and Venu Srinivasan, who do not belong to the Parsi community, a specific demographic associated with Tata Trusts governance.
The Tata Trusts, a group of philanthropic foundations established by the Tata family, have a long history of supporting education, health, and community development within India. Mistry, who resigned from his position within the Trusts in October last year, claims that the appointments contradict established norms that stipulate leadership roles in these trusts should be reserved for Parsis.
Noel Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts, is also named in the affidavit as an individual involved in the alleged decision-making process, drawing attention to the governance practices of the Trusts. Mistry's affidavit requests an investigation into the decision-making processes at Bai Hirabai Jamsetji Tata Navsari Charitable Institution, which is among several trusts under the umbrella of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust & Allied Trusts.
The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust & Allied Trusts manage an additional nine trusts, collectively contributing to various charitable activities across India. Mistry's actions reflect ongoing discussions regarding the governance and operational transparency of philanthropic organisations in India, particularly those as prominent as the Tata Trusts. Governance experts have pointed out that ensuring diversity and adherence to established guidelines is essential for maintaining the integrity of such institutions.
As the investigation progresses, it may shed light on the practices within one of India's oldest and most respected frameworks for philanthropy. The response from the Maharashtra charity commissioner and the Tata Trusts will be closely monitored by stakeholders invested in the governance of charitable foundations. This incident highlights broader conversations about inclusivity and community representation in organisations dedicated to public good.
