Massive Security Deployment in Delhi Ahead of Anticipated Protests
Delhi prepares for large-scale protests, deploying 35,000 security forces amidst calls for electoral reforms and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

In Delhi, preparations are underway for a significant protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which has gained traction among younger voters. The protest is scheduled for Saturday and calls for crucial electoral reforms as well as the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who has faced allegations of manipulating voter lists. Concerning these allegations, the Election Commission has denied any wrongdoing, while Kumar has not yet addressed the demand for his resignation.

In response to the potential unrest, authorities have implemented a substantial security presence in the capital. Approximately 35,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to manage the situation. All access routes to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest venue, have been barricaded with metal barriers to deter gatherings. This has resulted in significant traffic disruptions in central Delhi, with delays reported as journeys that typically take 15 minutes have exceeded an hour during peak times.

Metal barricades and police presence at the protest hub have intensified scrutiny of those attempting to enter. Despite early arrivals, some protesters faced questioning, while police utilised loudspeakers to appeal for cooperation from the public. The Delhi Police have stated that these measures are necessary to maintain public order and to limit the gathering at Jantar Mantar, which has a maximum capacity of 1,000 people.

In a statement on social media platform X, the Delhi Police defended their actions, citing safety concerns and the need to prevent overcrowding. Additionally, several metro stations leading to the gathering site have been closed, and train services to Delhi have been cancelled to further restrict mobilization.

Abhijeet Dipke, founding member of the CJP, has pledged that protesters will march towards Jantar Mantar regardless of the restrictions, stating, "If you want to jail us or even shoot us we are prepared," addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly.

The CJP garnered attention earlier this summer for their successful demonstrations aimed at education reforms, which resulted in the resignation of the education minister. Their recent activities indicate a resurgence in mobilising support, including a rally in Mumbai, and a substantial demonstration in Bengaluru earlier this week.

The upcoming protest is anticipated to be one of the largest in recent history, bolstered by support from various opposition parties, farmers' organisations, and student groups. However, members of the CJP have accused the government of hindering their supporters' ability to reach Delhi for the protest.

As tensions rise, police officials have reiterated that the protest permission was denied due to the short notice provided by the CJP, emphasising that official requests to gather must be submitted at least ten days in advance. Previous incidents of non-compliance with police directives have also influenced this decision.

At the core of these protests lies the controversial electoral roll revision known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which commenced last year. Although the Election Commission claims this process aims to eliminate duplicate and ineligible names, critics assert that it disproportionately affects eligible voters and serves the interests of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Modi. Both the BJP and the Election Commission have dismissed these allegations.

Over recent days, tensions between opposition leaders and the Election Commission have escalated, culminating in scenes where police intervened to disperse opposition MPs during their demonstrations. Videos capturing police actions against prominent opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi, have circulated widely on social media and sparked public outcry.

As the situation evolves, all eyes are on Delhi as citizens and authorities brace for Saturday's anticipated protest, which is set to test the city's security measures and the resolve of the CJP and its supporters.
