Mass Production of Inkjet-Printed OLED Screens Begins
Chinese manufacturer TCL starts mass production of inkjet-printed OLED screens, signalling potential changes in monitor, laptop, and TV pricing.

TCL CSOT, a Chinese electronics manufacturer, has reportedly commenced mass production of inkjet-printed OLED panels. The initial offering includes a 27-inch 4K panel designed for monitors, providing a refresh rate of 120Hz and a brightness level of 300 nits along with 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut. This level of colour accuracy is essential for accurate and lifelike image reproduction.

While the current focus is on monitor applications, future developments may extend to larger panels designed for televisions. Industry sources suggest that the current production stage is considered early, labelled as 'low volume', utilising TCL's Gen 5.5 inkjet line, which had previously been dedicated to commercial applications rather than consumer products.

The announcement adds credibility to reports from OLED-Info, which indicates that production of these panels is officially underway. Furthermore, the new MSI Pro Max monitor has been linked to the use of this TCL OLED panel, although the precise affiliation hasn’t been confirmed in MSI's press release.

MSI has highlighted the monitor's specifications, noting a pixel density of 164 PPI and an innovative RGB stripe sub-pixel layout that promises improved clarity in both text and images. The pricing details for this new monitor remain undisclosed, which is common at this stage of development as products typically take time to reach market.

The advantages of inkjet-printed OLED technology, compared to traditional approaches, include enhanced power efficiency, a likely prolonged lifespan, and notably reduced production costs. TCL has suggested that these new panels could be 20% cheaper than current OLED offerings, with the potential for further savings as production scales. Analysts predict that the costs could decrease by up to 35% as manufacturing becomes more sophisticated and waste is minimized.

The implications for the market are significant. A shift toward greater affordability for OLED monitors and laptops may result, offering consumers wider access to this technology. Additionally, the advancements in OLED manufacturing are expected to prompt established manufacturers like LG Display and Samsung to adjust their pricing strategies in response to increased competition.

Lastly, competition in the OLED market is set to intensify with the introduction of BOE's Generation 8.6 panels, which began mass production last month. These larger substrates facilitate a more cost-effective manufacturing process, further pressuring market prices. However, the penetration of these products, particularly in larger formats such as televisions, will require time. Industry observers remain optimistic about this transformative phase in display technology.
